Restaurants in Palatine or Arlington Heights

You have to ask for it to be spicy. Their seafood ingredients are plump and moist. I think they are on Golf Rd. I love the Singapor noodle dish at Fortune Kookie - my friends usually make this lunch drive and I cannot remember where this place is except we go up Meachum until it turns into Plum Grove? Also there is a restaurant called Mexico Uno in this area. Hmmm. well, s'ok - actually, they have these candies on the counter that remind me of the candies a carry out place in Port Arthur, TX used to put into our to-go dinners and I'd always want to eat more. This is the main reason why I go here when I do. Becuase their candies taste teh same and they are about three centimeters longer. haha. Actually, I have been to La Valle on Algonquin Rd but the name is a secret since the most prominent name you can see is Mexican Food. This one is east of 53 (the others are not). I have had decent enchilades here. (side note, take a trip to Taco Grande in Batavia. OMG! Food like I got in El Paso! Chihuahua style! woohoo! Salsa! OMG! grrrrr. they changed the ingredients for their red sauce on their enchilades (chipotle sauce? not sure) and I like the old way better. grr) There's some chains in Schaumburg - such as Big Bowl and I tend to get the Thai Beef Curry noodles there. I love green curry. They also have Hibiscus Ice tea. Hey, what can I say. I think Hibiscis makes for a nice ice tea. Ice tea is what lemonade should be since most people add too much sugar to lemonade. sheesh. Over at the intersection of Arlington Heights Rd and Golf (again east of 53?) is Bowl House, so far my favorite Japanese restaurant in the area, but I have not tried others yet. Time constraints. I don't live in Schaumburg, I just work there. I like the salmon teriyaki. One of their sushi combos has this fish I wish I knew the name of - I think it might be like tuna, and it is a pale off white color and I think they might sear it for 10 seconds or less in some sort of tangy sauce. Wow, I love it. It's on the big sushi combo though, so I am seldom hungry enough to eat everything on that. I hate it when I forget the names of things. (incidently over this weekend I went to Sushi House in Naperville - closer to home and for a picnic I got some seared Tuna to go. It was beautiful. Thank god the wind did not blow it into river like it did my fresh new comic book.) I have not made the rounds of the Thai restaurants recently enough and feel I would be irresponsible in mentioning any. The other day I had a killer chicken panang curry - sadly I wasn't hungry enough to finish nearly enough of it and I packed it away to my office to take home for dinner. whereupon I left it there. small tragedy. What is the oil or spice that they put in the hot soup before meals which makes it tangy? I want to buy some. Are there any Pho places in Schumburg? I weep. there's one north of Naperville but I forget the name of the Town, Wheaton? There's a Pho dish at Big Bowl but not really. They just call it that. I mean, it s'okay but not exactly the Pho that is Pho. It only does as a substitute. They dressed it up or something. Pho in suite and tie. (they also come in on the side of determinism in that old eternal arguement - they do not give you the choice to add your own leaves and sprouts and they insist you have Pho with what may be an unhealthy dose of cilantro. (not to mention not having the red pasty stuff in the plastic bottle with a rooster on it.)) sh

In Palatine I've had excellent dinners at very reasonable prices at the Village Green Tavern on NW HWY (14) just West of Smith (right hand side)

Basically, to find restaurants in Palatine or Arlington Heights, just drive along Dundee or Rand Rd or Palatine Rd or NW Hwy. There are not too many decent places over here. Much better places around Woodfield in Schaumburg. Anyway ... Chinese: Hong Min on Palatine Rd west of Plum Grove. Nice setting, more than average prices and less than average *oily* food (I disliked the place, btw) There's Fortune Kookie on NW Hwy (but I haven't been there) There are a few of Chinese buffets (Dundee and Arl Hts Rd as well as Rand and Arlington Hts Rd). Cheap food and quality is as you would expect (bad!). (Ong lei buffet ... UGH!) There is a chinese place by Euclid and Plum Grove but I have not tried it (Kowloon). Lots of small chinese places in the area. Japanese: Sushi Asahi on NW Hwy and Smith St. Seemed better than average but it didn't strike me as memorable place Kumon on Arlington Hts and Lake Cook Rd. Decent sushi. Hanabi on Dundee at Buffalo Grove Rd. Pacific Buffet at Dundee and Ridge. Decent dinner buffet. Although sushi is not special (thin slices of fish), you have a large selection of foods to choose from. You'll find many Japanese people at this place. Thai: Siri Thai II on Palatine Rd Great Thai Cuisine and good deals for lunch. But may run $20/person or more for dinner. "Thai Cuisine" on Plum Grove and Euclid. Small place but family run so you get good service (try the whole fried fish). Italian: Some pasta place on Dundee just east of Rand Rd whose name escapes me. (but I haven't eaten there yet) Quizno's Subs on Dundee just west of Rt 53. Baked subs. Delicious. French: Le Titi de Paris on Dundee at Kennicott. Haven't been there ($$$). American: Walker Bros Pancake House Dundee and Kennicott. Famous pancake place with *huge* portions. Long wait for Sunday brunch time. Aida's Deli. A deli but good food. Just opp Walker Bros. The Ranch at Euclid and Plum Grove. Greek/American: Kostas on Dundee and Hicks. Your standard chicken, gyros, blah food. Mexican: Couple of small mexican taquerias on Dundee. There is a mexican place on Dundee (Las Palmas?). It's west of Buffalo Grove Rd. It's OK. Very americanized food. Pizza: Lou Malnatti's and Giordanos are both around Lake Cook Rd and Buffalo Grove Rd in the big shopping sprawl. Taverns: There are some tavern-like places (more for liquid food). Idols Sports Club, Trackside (by the racecourse), etc. If you wish to drive a bit, there are dozens (hundreds?) of places on Golf Rd all the way from Mt Prospect Rd to Barrington Rd (including the places around Woodfield and the Streets of Woodfield). But, that would be Mt. Prospect, Schaumburg, Rolling Meadows, etc. And, I presume you want something up north by Dundee. Quite a few places in Wheeling (Dundee and Milwaukee) too. Enjoy. If you find some decent places that I have not discovered in this area, please do post. I am always looking for new places to try. Sajjad

It's going on five years since I moved away, but there used to be a nice little eatery called, if the memory isn't all gone yet, Nuevo Mexico. It is, or was, one block north of the tracks and a block or two west of Plum Grove Road, on the fringes of what remains of the old downtown area. Pretty good in general, and they had great guacamole. But five years is probably longer than the average life of the restaurants that have been in that location.
On Palatine Road, two blocks south and a block or so further west, Siri opened a branch a few years ago. We went there with friends when it was still fairly new, and had mixed feelings, and I haven't been back. But if they're still open, the odds that they're the best Thai in Palatine have to be fairly good, being the only specimen I knew of.
For sushi... years before I moved away I used to like the Sakura down near Algonquin & 53, but in more recent visits I've been less pleased. Not sure which has changed - them, me, or both. At the opposite extreme of the specified range (well, Sakura is a bit over the line, but it's almost in Palatine <grin>), there's the Japanese restaurant just north of Dundee on Arlington Heights Road, whose name I will now find I have forgotten due to lack of use. Sorry, I've only been there a couple times with friends who found it in their back yard. Oh, and Sea Ranch on Golf a light or two east of Arlington Heights Road used to be pleasant, though I ate their sushi mostly back when they were take-away only.
Nothing else is coming to mind as worthy of mention aside from a few places that I know are long since closed, or are well out of the target area. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
