I'll second Kamehachi, the sushi place. I have had a nice meal at Orso's too. It's Italian. Some pople really like Salpicon also. It's Mexican.

Try Tanzy @ 215 W. North (the old Azteca space); casual - chic decor, generous portions (try the pork chop, hanger steak, lamb chops, tartare trio sushi appetizer, good desserts). Entrees run $12 - 22; good wine list.

It's gotten great press (Pat Bruno, Chicago Magazine, Chicago Social, Reader, New City....). The chef is a friend of mine, so I'll admit I'm a bit prejudiced ;)

I finally made it over there back in October and was a bit unimpressed but I did want to get there before they went under (the place is almost always close to empty, it seems).

Adobo, on the other hand almost always has more people in it than it merits.

I'm fond of Trattoria Roma whose chef just has a way with cream sauces.

The best Thai in the neighborhood is easily Tiparos on Clark Street. Thai Plate, I fear, may not be long for this world given that you pay more there for food which isn't really as good as Tiparos and have the ambience of, well, a tiny restaurant on the first floor of an SRO. But they do give you free gum with the check.

But ultimately the choice really comes down to what you want to eat and how much you want to spend....

Thanks for all your suggestions. The night we went, the weather was so bad we just ducked into the first place we came to, which happened to be Adobo. I thought the place was great. The guacamole was superb--freshly made at the table. I had chiles rellenos filled with pork and a mole sauce. Excellent. The marguaritas are served like martinis from a shaker.

I didn't realize that my friend has food allergies when we arrived. The server and restaurant were extremely accomodating about putting together a dinner she could eat--not easy since dairy, corn, and tomatoes were all out. They get a lot of points from me for that.
