Some suggestions:

1. Greektown. Parthenon. Try the family-style meal, which is cheap, copious (a sample of many of their items) and very good. Wash it down with a bottle of retsina (granted, it's an acquired taste, but one easy to acquire).

2. Chinatown. I like the Evergreen, the last restaurant on the southern end of Wentworth (east side of street). Make sure you get the "Chinese menu" (it's in English). The dishes are variable, but some are spectacular, including the taro duck (call in advance to order, it's only $10), the deep-fried bean curd stuffed with shrimp in casserole, and the Szechuan-style string beans. Also the clams or oysters in black bean sauce.

3. Pilsen. The famous "Neuvo Leon" on 18th St. near Ashland. Not fancy food, but excellent, and highly favored by locals. I love the chicken mole, which, at $6, is not only a world-class dish but is cheap!

The last time I was in Chicago, my sister-in-law took my wife and me to a small restaurant on Milwaukee. It's name was Czerny something-or-other, but their sign was very notable: a big red apple logo.

It was great. An incredible buffet of Polish food, and included soup and dessert. All for the unbelievable price of $4.75/pp. I think lunchtime was more like $4.25/pp.

I'd go there again without hesistation. It was great.
