Mexican Restaurants in Chicago (downtown area)?

I went to an excellent Mexican restaurant in Chicago this weekend. It is called the TOPOLOBAMPO. It was the first Mexican fine-dining experience Iv ever had. Mexican food is usually garbage covered with cheese and sour cream but this was a *serious* restaurant. There is an adjacent restaurant called the Frontera Grill which is a bit more casual but serves the same great food. If you choose to try either one..make reservations..It is currently a hot-spot in Chicago and it is difficult to get a table. 400 block of North Clark Street, Downtown. --David
Once again, I just want to put in an endorsement for Nuevo Leon. If you're going to go to a Mexican restaurant in Chicago (and near downtown), it might as well be a Mexican restaurant that thrives in an Hispanic area of the city. If you're from California, then believe me, it will be worth it. Just look it up in the phone book. It's somewhere around 20th Street (south of UIC), and a somewhat informal place- you won't need reservations, and you may need to know a little Spanish. The menu gives you many options to choose from, and my roommate (who lives a couple blocks away) will vouch that any choice you make is a good one. I can only vouch for the Enchiladas Suizas de Pollo, which was damn good. The food there actually reminded me of some of the taco bars back home (San Jose). I'm just curious, has anyone else tried this place? If so, what did you think? Anyhow, it's my reccommendation and the reccomendation of my roommate and another friend's father- and this is for anyone in the Chicago area that is looking for good Mexican food. :-Dan

Nothing fancy, just great mexican food; I visit there often. Note that it is on 18th street (not 20th), a few blocks east of Asland avenue. They have a private parking lot on the southeast corner of the intersection just east of the restaurant. Great salsa(fairly hot), good homemade tamales, great mole, try the Sesos Lampreados (sp?), brains battered in egg if you are daring (delicious!).... --Ken

I ate at both of these a couple of years ago when I was in town for a conference. We tried to get into Frontera Grill for dinner one night but found a 2 hour wait (they do not take reservations, or at least they did not at the time). We were thinking of leaving but I asked if they could take us at Topolobampo instead.. turns out they had a table available (they do take reservations but had a no-show) and seated us almost immediately. The food was very good.. definitely not your normal Mexican. It was sort of pricey. The next day I went to Frontera Grill for lunch (got there early to avoid the line). I found that I enjoyed it more than Topolobampo. Yes, it's not as fancy, but the food was really excellent. Oh, you have to pay for tortilla chips.. that was my only real complaint. -- Bill [email removed]
