They've had their ups and down in the past (and recent past) but have landed solidly. I haven't had a bad performance in 3+ years. The cellar is a mile deep, their preps are fabulous and consistent, and their service is among the most attentive and knowledgable in the city (if not the US). I generally try to eat upstairs, the room is much more homey than the bistro-style downstairs. They have a couple of signed Miros on the wall with tapestries and window covering that remind me of (the one time) I made it to Le Perroquet. It started out as a private eating club that survived many years. My dad was invited to join, and did. At the time I was too young to throw good money at so I didn't eat there until after my dad we re-admitted. He was thrown out for not eating there enough! As a private club they needed more than the once or twice a month that my mom and dad ate there. I think he still has the letter. He politely asked some years later to be re-admitted and he was gladly accepted back. They went through a change of Chefs and owners and are now open to the general public. Some of the original dishes still survive though, the venison-steak is still. In the old days you would recieve one menu per course, and a stack of hand written 4x6 index cards with the daily specials hand-written in calligraphy (without prices on them). When they ran out of the two or three of each course, they'd pull the card. Now they're prix fixe $75 plus wine and the results are excellent. They don't hit critical mass until 8/8:30 so you can generally weasel your way into a 6/6:30 without a problem. As for the pool. We split a $200/square progression pool (pays every score) four ways here at the desk. Do you think I was on the edge of my seat that entire game? Bleh, what a letdown. trent
