>Better yet, where are the best places to go (for those in the Chicagoland >area)? I've tried Max's on Western and Al's on Taylor. Anywhere else I should try? My favorite place for Italian beef is Roma's, located roughly 4200 N. on Cicero. Actually, I'm particularly partial to their Italian sausage with hot giardinara.

I second that vote- Roma's. Hot, big portions, sopping bread. Too bad they don't know how to make good french fries. In regards to the comment about a recipe, making your own is not difficult. Both Dominick's and Jewel carry good fresh beef (and the all important sauce) as well as the frozen 'bucket' brands. And of course fresh italian bread.

I have the same complaint about Al's and this place is just as good with very large portions.

Does anybody have a recipe? I think the person who mentioned a place called "victoria's" was really speaking of "vitorri's", which is absolutely the _best_ beef i've had in chicago. most of the people that walk in there are real chicago characters wit reel chickago acksense, if ya nowe wateye meane. really, go in and say "large beef-hot" and you won't be sorry. narayan

This is on North Ave. about 2mi. west of Harlem. I have never had = better beef and combo sandwiches. Another great place is Carm's. They have three locations in the burbs. Kelly

-That is like saying, "The best burger in Chicago is McDonald's". Anyone who really knows Italian Beef knows that the 2 best places in Chicagoland are... Mr. Beef on Orleans in Chicago, and Johnnie's Beef at 7500 W. North Ave. in Elmwood Park. Why don't you go and check it out and tell me I'm wrong.

I was hoping the name Johnnie's wouldn't come up. Didn't want it to get more packed than it is already. Mr. Beef is good if you're stuck downtown, but Johnnie's is undeniably the best beef sandwich around. (Sausage is pretty good. Fries are just okay). Just get the beef, you'll see. Their Italian ice is unbeatable, too.

For an excellent Beef in the tradition of Al's on Taylor (when the portions were still good) and Roma's on Cicero, go to Mr. Beef on Orleans about a block north of Ohio.

Both Mr. Beef and Johnnie's are terrific places where we take out-of-towners. (BTW: Jay Leno did a piece on Mr. Beef on The Tonight Show last year.) -- Barbara
