Help is appreciated. I'd hate to waste my money on bad : restaurants. Three places that I'd definitely recommend are Gandhi, Moti Mahal and Sher-a-Punjab. The place that used to be India House (now something like Indian Garden, same ownership) seems good, but I've only had their buffet. I've heard good things about Viceroy and Tiffin, but don't have enough experience to say much about them. I've been disappointed in the buffet at Hyderabad House, but your mileage may vary. The food at Udupi Palace, a South Indian vegetarian place, is good, but the portions were skimpy the one time I was there. Don't know anything about delivery; AFAIK all the places on Devon meet your last criterion. : Also, out of curiosity, what is the main differences between pakastani food : and indian food? Well, one obvious difference is the use of beef in Pakistani food.

Indian food
I strongly recommend Tiffin. I think it's the best of the lot by a long shot. Their food is primarily North Indian. The interior is really nice and the food is excellent, though too spicy for some. Here are my recommendations in the Indian section on Devon Avenue: Lunch buffet: INDIA GARDEN, TIFFIN KITCHEN, maybe VICEROY. Dinner Buffet: SHER-A-PANJAB (will make any bread, try Onion Kulcha) A la carte South Indian vegetarian: UDUPI PALACE Snacks: FLAVORLAND (attached to Viceroy), SUKH SAGAR (vegetarian only) Avoid: ROSE INDIA (formerly Annadata), SULTAN'S PALACE I believe HYDERABAD HOUSE, a perennial "avoid" candidate is now closed. No idea about delivery. Even if they do it, they'd probably be unreliable, you are best off picking it up yourself. :) For a very different and rustic flavor, try BLUE RIBBON on Ridge, a taxi-drivers's place with pool table, video games, etc. There is no menu but the guy will tell you what he has (usually quite a few meat items and one vegetable) and you can have a very good meal for a fixed price ($5?). If they happen to have tea ready, they usually throw that in for free. BTW, also on Devon, SHIRAZ is a pretty good Persian restaurant. Cheers, and please share your experiences and reviews, Anil

There visible cockroaches under the buffet and it was not the Punjab of old. : A la carte South Indian vegetarian: UDUPI PALACE The best of the Veggy Indian places. : Cheers, and please share your experiences and reviews, : Anil
I would recommend Indian Garden, Tiffin, Viceroy and Updupi in Devon. There's Peacock in Vernon Hills which is quite good. Bukhara, Clay Oven and Gaylord in Downtown Chicago are among the better ones. What goes on in their kitchens is a matter of their own (roaches etc.). Should be ours too, but... I would rather not dig deeper into this or I would not be able to find courage to eat in any of these good, in appearance, atmosphere and quality of food, restaurants. Note: This may or may not be true for the restaurants I have listed above. I have knowledge of some random ones not included in the list. -Vandana Someone wrote: : Moved near Devon and Western recently, sort of overwhelmed by all the choices : in indian food. Gaylord and Bukhara in downtown Chicago are quite good. Tiffin and Indian Garden in Devon and Peacock in Vernon Hills, all these are among the better ones and my favorite. -Vandana

Is it still there? Maybe you're thinking of Standard India Restaurant, on Belmont a short way east of the Howard El stop? They have an excellent buffet set up, with both vegetarian and meat dishes... $7.95 for all you can eat.
