Moti Mahal is supposed to be real good and pretty cheap too. Although I guess its not the most beautiful restaurant on the inside. I haven't been there but I've had friends recommend it.I'm not sure where Devon is but Moti Mahal is near Clark & Belmont.

Devon is North of Belmont.
Most of the South Asian stores and restaurants are in the vicinity of Devon and Western. Two that are often recommended are Bundoo Khan and Sher-a-Punjab. If you are veg. then there are some all veg. or some South Indian places too (names that come to mind are Udupi Palace and ... can't think of it at the moment but there's at least one more famous South Indian restaurant on Devon.) There is also a Viceroy of India and a Bombay Palace (I think non-veg.)

If you're interested in Afghan, there is the Helmand at Halsted and Belmont or Bukhara (bills itself as Indian, but the food is more Northwest) which is downtown. Also, there is the Klay Oven. For Iranian food (hey if Bukhara qualifies as Indian ...) there is Reza's (on Clark street or downtown on Ontario.)

Moti Mahal, on Belmont, is excellent. 4 of us ate there for approx. $25. The food was terrific and plentiful. The ambience leaves a little (a lot) to be desired, but so what.

Try Kanval Palace at Devon and Campbell.

Isn't there a Moti Mahal on Devon (intersecting with another street)? Another restaurant that is good is the Viceroy. I seem to remember that about half block west of Viceroy is a restuarant called Moti Mahal, which is also very good. I thought that Bundoo Kahn's was very greasy, my husband seems to think that their paranthas are out of this world. The south Indian restaurant across the street from Kahn's, which was mentioned by somebody earlier, is also very good.

I have to put in my recommendation for Bundoo-Khan on Devon Street. So frequently I find myself in Indian restaurants that have toned down the spice-level for American tastebuds...This is clearly not a problem at Bundoo Khan.

As for prior complaints about the lack of ambiance at the Devon Street restaurants...IMOHO, if I want ambiance, I'll go spend $50 at Bukhara. I personally enjoy the grungy "dive-like" settings in many of the Devon Street joints (as well as the ungodly low prices that accompany).

As for concerns of cleanliness...I've always considered a trip to Devon Street as an adventure. In fact, the absolute best Indian/Pakistani food my friends and I have ever had in Chicago came from a place that didn't even have a food license. Don't be scared...life is too short to eat at McDonalds.
