How about Cumberland north towards Park Ridge? The suggestion that you try Don Juan's is a good one. The regular menu consists of all the usual suspects that one would find at a typical American/Mexican restaurant, but the nightly specials are incredible. The specials by Patrick, the chef, rival Frontera/Topolobampo and one would be hard pressed to find more enjoyable or innovative Mexican/fusion dining anywhere. One caveat, Don Juan's has opened up another restaurant connected to the original, Patricio's, on the nights that Patricio's is open you may have to ask for the nightly specials in the main restaurant or go a door or two down to dine at Patricio's. I would also recommend Zia's. We have been going to Zia's for 5 or 6 months now and really enjoy it. Zia's has become our, don't want to cook, where should we go on the spur of the moment, neighbors want to get together for a bite, not too far from our house, restaurant. The food is good, reliable and there are some innovative dishes. Zia's has excellent service, free valet parking and a decent and reasonable wine list. The last time that we were there my wife had Prince Edward mussels with chiles and garlic that was wonderful. It was on the nightly special appetizers, but they were happy to make it up as a main course for her. I had butternut squash ravioli with mascarpone cream and toasted hazelnuts, which while a little rich to have often, was just what I was in the mood for that night. Zia's does fish very well and they also, of course, have pasta and various meat dishes. The carpaccio is nice and the calamari grilled with balsamic is also good. If they have grilled octopus with balsamic as a special appetizer I would highly recommend it. There is also a good, though not spectacular, Vietnamese restaurant in the same area as Don Juan's and Zia's and you may wish to give that a try also. I haven't been there since they changed their focus a bit (to be more American) and got a new chef, but they used to be among the best German/Austrian fare in town. (The old chef went to Smith and Wollensky.) Edelweiss' owners also own some ski resorts in Europe and the current chef was imported from an Austrian resort. Edelweiss Bistro 708/452-6040 7650 W. Haven't been there yet, but heard rave reviews. While on the subject of this neighborhood, anyone been to the new Thai restaurant on Irving, a few blocks west of Harlem?
