So many, many, many choices.

Here are my favorites:

Everest - French; located on the top floor of a downtown building; CONSISTENTLY rated at or near the top of every Chicago restaurant list; very, VERY expensive but some of the best food anywhere on the planet.

Ambria - French/Continental; located about two miles north of downtown; ditto on quality and cost.

Pump Room - American; located in Ambassador East Hotel downtown; celebrity hang-out; elegant; nice old-world place for dinner and dancing; expensive, but not like the previous two.

If it's romance you want, any one of these three will delight you.

Jack

P.S. Many people rave about a place called Charlie Trotter's. Charlie's family has a lot of media connections and they get a lot of favorable press. I personally find the service to be sub-standard, the portions small, and the facility cramped.

A place that I find romantic is Geja's cafe, on Armitage. It's a fondue place with a nice atmosphere, but the dinners there are almost too generous. I would recommend getting a booth rather than a table in the middle, because those tables are quite cramped.

Hope this helps.

I would like to second the recommendation on Gejas. And this is more than just a ME TOO. I ate there in 1979, so if (a) they are still in business and (b) I remember one meal there...they must be good. Interestingly, I was at one of those small tables, And they are! I also remember them being low, I think to make the reach into the fondue pot less difficult! Barbara

If you can get a reservation (and have the $$$ to spend), Charlie Trotter's could easily fill the bill...312 248-6228...Halsted & Armitage.

Good luck!

I can also recommend Gordon's - attractive, semi-dark, great food, 3-piece jazz combo on the weekends with a small dance floor. Even stopping by for just dessert works well.

A classic case of YMMV (your mileage will vary). I, on the other hand, had the finest dining experience of my life at Trotter's. Superb professional service, food that was out of this world, (yes, the portions were small; all 14 courses!), and a very elegant, albeit simple, facility with plenty of room. Did we eat at the same place?

And I'm not what you call a resaurant newbie - Trotter's is my yardstick and nobody has even come close since..

My favorite parts of my first (and last) visit to this place were (1) The main course arrived cold; and (2) Just before the server handed me my plate she noticed that some sauce had splashed on the outer edge. So, not wanting to present it that way, she took the towel from her waist, dipped it in the CHAMPAGNE BUCKET, and wiped off the edge of the plate. What a memorable place!

I second the recommendation for Gordon's and also for Ambria. Both are very nice and romantic, although very different. Gordon's is eclectic while Ambria is very traditional.
