Chicago Pizza from Unos

I just returned to Texas from my first trip to Chicago. While there I wanted to try some "Chicago deep dish pizza" and wound up at a place on Golf road in Rolling Meadows named Uno's. I ordered a medium combo pizza and waited expectantly for my meal. What arrived was something sizewise between a personal pan pizza and a small (priced at $13) and what turned out to be about the worst pizza I have ever eaten. The crust tasted like ground saltines mixed with water and the sausage had more salt in it than 2 puonds of salt pork. I know that some where in Chicago resides perhaps the best deep dish pizza in the civilized world but Unos AINT IT!!!!! The only good thing was that we didn't have to watch the Bears game at the same time. I don't think they keep a stomach pump on premises.

This is sad because you were mere minutes away from the Lou Malnati's at Roselle and Schaumburg, which, IMHO, ranks right up there with Chicago's best, when eaten fresh (as opposed to mail-order).

But those in the know would have sent you into the city for something legendary.

Someone will probably correct me, but I think there was an original Uno that was pretty good, but the nationwide chain isn't the same thing.

Now if you'd just traveled a little further to Wolf and Dundee, you would have found GREAT pizza at Joe's!! It's definitely NOT deep dish, but is IMHO the best pizza and best deal in the Chicago suburban area.

Of course, if the "cracker" crust turned you off at Uno's, you probably wouldn't like the wonderful thin cracker crust at Joe's.....to each his own....

Now about that Bears comment................ ;0

Kathie (who thinks Uno's here in San Diego is NOTHING like Uno's in downtown Chicago!!!!)
