Chicago Mexican Restaurant Recommendations

Did Ancient Astronauts named "Roger O" once write the following? Read the book:
>Here are two of the best right next to each other: Frontera Grill and
>Topolobampo, 445 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60610

I think that depends on if by Mexican one means "Cuisine inspired largely or in part by the cuisine of Mexico and the American Southwest" or "authentic Mexican cuisine". Frontera and Topo are good (though overpriced, in my opinion) but I honestly think of them as being fancy southwest fusion rather than Mexican.

I always enjoy going to Tecalitlan. Tecalitlan has good mexican food, but it's not super fancy if your looking for something special for hosting visiting royalty. There is a fancier "Hacienda Tecalitlan" as well, though I've never been there so I can't speak as to what it's like.

But if one is looking specifically for mole, I recommend Ixcapuzalco. The chef (formerly of Frontera Grill, btw) specializes in mole sauces, and there's a different featured mole sauce for every day of the week. I've only been there once but had excellent duck in mole sauce if memory serves.

Tecalitlan rocks! My Mexican friends concur, and it will give you the flavor of a neighborhood restaurant. Hacienda Tecalitlan is good, but I prefer the restaurant on Chicago Ave. Ixcapuzalco is also very good. Different experience.

Greek Islands has an outpost on Butterfield across from the Yorktown mall (although I'm not sure which actual 'burb that would be).

I've been to the new, just opened Heaven on Seven on Clark St. just south of Addison. For those of you who don't know, it's a New Orleans - style restaurant with moderate prices and spicy gumbo and other such foods. I like it. Indoor or outdoor dinning.

Well, it's actually Steve, not Rick. That aside, I'm quite picky about my scrambles, and I have never had bad ones there. I'm very partial to corned beef hash, and theirs is good (but not the best I've ever had, I must admit). The apple and swedish pancakes are very good, as is the feta and gyros omelette. But most of all, I just like the "feel" of the place. Their waitresses have those great two-packs-of-Pall-Malls-a-day- for-30-years voices and call me "sweetie" or "darling" and the place is run by two very nice brothers of Greek extraction (as a diner *should* be). And it is quick. I like a breakfast place where I can be in and out in no more than about 45 minutes. They're happy to refill my coffee for as long as I want to stay, mind you, but when I want breakfast, I'm usually *hungry* and they make sure my meal's on the table in no time at all. (And they don't look all cross-eyed at me when I pour Tabasco all over my corned beef hash.)

> Have you tried the Naperville Pancake Cafe at Rickert Drive and 75th St?

Nope, but it's on my list now. Thanks, Dave!

Great suggestions. Of the two, most Americans would probably feel more at home in Fontera Grill; Topolobampo is more "exotic" as well as expensive. But they are both superb, next to each other, and if you have the time, visit both.

Some people swear by Hacienda at North and Clyborn. I have no experience.

Another place I can recommend a few miles away:
Ixcapuzalco, 2919 North Milwaukee Avenue (773-486-7340)

But if you are staying on Michigan Ave and have a tight schedule with time to explore, just take a cab to Fontera Grill.

Excellent mole sauces....

I tried that place and I did not like it.

I dont know, I must be spoiled from the excelent Mexican that I got in Raleigh NC.

The chips were thick and hard as a rock, not thin, crispy and melt in your mouth.

They didnt have a salsa picalsa (sp?) when I asked for it. Thats what one restaurants down there told me to ask for when I wanted it spicy. Everyone down there knew what I ment immediately. Here I get blank stares when I ask. (guess that should be a hint)

The salsa they did serve had far too much celantro in it, overwhelming the salsa.

The chilie rellenos (sp) where tough, breaded (ug) and drownd in this barely passable sauce. (double_ug)

OK, you're talking chile rellenos and I can stay out of this no longer! For anyone willing to take a trip to Waukegan (sorry, I know most don't do this on purpose - I happen to work near there) perhaps the best chile rellenos I have ever had is at "El Ranchito Michoacano". Don't go for the service, it's just ok; Don't got for the decor, it's alright but nothing special. The FOOD! I caught the restaurant on a Kaplan review last March and it's EXCELLENT!

...But it's the chile rellenos - the true test!

El Ranchito Michoacano is at 1310 N. Lewis, Waukegan (847-623-6936). They're known for their seafood but everything is awesome.

I am however upset that they replaced their "bean deep" on the menu with something called "bean dip". Bummer :)
