My absolute favorite Polish restaurant is on Division St. just east of Ashland called Podhalanka. I have always preferred this place over Busy Bee (all the food is incredible, the service is friendly, it's a very small place, that's never too crowded). Podhalanka has great soups that are like meals in themselves (and they're only like $1.75 each). Be warned, that if you're looking for any American food (hamburgers, fries, etc.) then this is not the place for you. They serve only Polish food. My favorite entree is boiled beef with horseradish sauce, but the pierogis are always a good buy. There is also another Polish restaurant on Ashland just south of Division. If you're looking for Polish delis then Ceasars on Damen and Iowa St. is one of the best (you can even get hot meals to go). Up and down Chicago Ave. between Damen and Western there are many Polish restaurants and delis. Also, on Milwaukee Ave. from about the 2900 block to the 5000 block there are many Polish restaurants. So, please don't despair. There is Polish food everywhere! There's also a newer place, the name of which I forget, literally on the corner in a storefront that used to house a Mexican restaurant. From a comment a Polish friend made, I suspect they may have the same owner. Barry Grau ([email removed])

So I tooled on in, sat down at the counter, & ordered a bowl of mushroom soup. Very good. Nice size. That plus the bread makes a nice lunch. But, me, I'm a glutton. So....I ordered a plate of meat pierogi. Now I have eaten pierogi many times. So it is not my first time, nor my fifth, nor my fiftieth. And I have to tell you these were the best pierogi I have ever had. I also had two glasses of some kind of red liquid called "compote." Dunno what it was, but it was a good drink. With some ice in it, it's a fair substitute for iced tea. Without ice, it's still good. Total cost, $7.72, plus tip. I had about half the pierogi left over to take home, too. I could have eaten them all, but I plan to eat dinner tonight.

Very good chernina (with raisins and plums), fantastic barley soup, excellent pierogi. North Side of Lawrence about 50 feet east of Milwaukee.
