Big Bowl on Milwaukee

I thought Big Bowl was okay. Their homemade ginger ale was *strong* stuff. Note: do not give ginger phobes anything with ginger in it. (Unless she is a tall and leggy redhead.) The food itself was decent. It reminded me somewhat of those Flat Top Grill or Stir Fire grill places, where you put the ingredients in a bowl and they cook it for you. Except at Big Bowl you can order dishes and have them cooked, so you do not have to go up and choose ingredients. The menu consisted mainly of Thai food and light Chinese fare. So if you dig those two genres, then perhaps you will enjoy the restaurant. Personally, I would suggest that you actually go to a specific Thai or Chinese restaurant instead.

The atmosphere had a decidedly trendy yuppie look. The look was that of art deco combined with an Asian motiff. A nice touch was a clock projected onto a wall. The clock was just an image (still a working clock). Both Eddy and I remarked upon the coolness of such an item. The place was also packed, even on a Wednesday night. We had to wait a over thirty minutes to get seated. Apparently, their drink menu was extensive, and even consisted of several brands of imported Japanese and Chinese brews. I decided not to order any drink, as I was the one driving an accident prone vehicle.

Personally, I agree with Eddy in that it is highly unlikely that I will visit there again. It was a bit too "hip" for my taste, and the food, while not bad, was not any better than anywhere else. Costs of entrees was below $10, but cheaper Thai food can easily be had elsewhere.

I agree 100% with this assessment of Big Bowl. I visited the Big Bowl on LaSalle and Erie and thought both the food and decor were done well, but the restaurant didn't really win me over. It had the over-produced feel some people find in other Lettuce restaurants. I, too, would head elsewhere for Thai or Chinese food. However, it's not a bad place to keep in mind if your stuck for ideas in River North and want somewhere that will reasonably please a group of people, especially that ginger ale.

It's either Buffalo Grove or Lincolnshire. Too far east to be Palatine, too far north to be Wheeling, and probably not north enough to be Vernon Hills.
