You can't go wrong in the restaurants at the MANDARIN HOTEL, HONG KONG side, down in Central.

Without knowing what type of restaurants and what price range you're interested in, my very best advice is to head over to the Hong Kong Tourist Authority in the Star Ferry terminal (Kowloon side) and get a copy of their restaurant guide. (If there's time, you can get a copy by mail from one of their offices in the US.) It lists perhaps 100 restaurants with mini-reviews of each, and includes the type of cuisine and price range. We used it almost exclusively for restaurant recommendations on two trips (last year and year before) and the only "clinker" was a restaurant that was also recommended by friends of ours. Enjoy. Hong Kong is food heaven. Marcia S. [email removed]

i highly recommend Yunan Restaurant at Time Square on the Hong Kong Island (i think it is in either Wan Chai or Causeway Bay). There are 3 or 4 floors devoted to restaurants only, like "international fares" and "regional cuisines" etc. Yunan makes a chicken broth which can knock your socks off. The vermicelli dish is pretty popular too. There is also a pretty good shanghainese restaurant on the same floor.

there is also a chain called "Ah Yee", which sells soups and noodles. they have a pretty extensive menu and is very inexpensive. it is an excellent place for lunch.

i grew up in HK and i *really* missed the food.
