I've been to Frankfurt three or four times on business, and ate at several nice restaurants. However, one stands out from the rest: Bruckenkeller. Any concierge worth his salt (and any taxi driver for that matter) knows where it is. I've heard it called "Frankfurt's finest restaurant" by several people in the know.

Brukenkeller has been open for something like 400 years. They'll give you a (take-home) book that describes its history.

The menus are hand-written daily (I heartily recommend the more-expensive "full dinner" with all the courses, but you can do well ala carte as well), and they have a extensive wine list (hundreds of selections, including ancient (1940's) Rothchilds for > $2000), fabulous desserts and cheeses.

The atmosphere is definitely old-world, the waiters and hosts gracious - never stuffy. You'll definitely remember Brukenkeller as a highlight of your honeymoon (if you make reservations early in the day and tell them you're on your honeymoon, they might do something special for you!).

Language wasn't a problem for me there (I don't speak German), in Brukenkeller or any restaurant for that matter.

You can easily spend $150 for two. Go for it!

I have wonderful memories of Bruckenkeller and hope someday to return.

                    -----------------------------------

I also recommend the following casual restaurants (all much less expensive than Bruckenkeller):

* "Sachsenhausen Varte", a nice wild-game restaurant.
* "Dippegukker", a traditional German restaurant (2 locations).
* "Zum Storch Am Dom", another wonderful German restaurant (antique clocks
   shop next door), next to the cathedral (Dom).

Mail me back and let me know how you fared!!

Here's the list I mentioned, courtesy of Henry Pazos at the On-Site Inspection Agency (which maintains a permanent presence at Rhein-Main AFB and is constantly shuttling Russia-bound visitors through these restaurants). My own comments are in {brackets}. Directions assume you are starting at Rhein-Main, which is right next to the airport (of course) on the far side of the runways from the terminals. I have transcribed most of it verbatim, typos and all; it is distinctly hard to understand in places.

* Alt Sprendlingen, 06103-67326 {I have no idea what these numbers are -- phone, presumably?}. German; go straight out the front gate, stay on that road until you get to Sprendlingen and it is right across the street from the Bahnhof. Closed on Tues.

* Bachgrund, Worfelden, 06152-3641.  Very good German food but priced a little higher {not *that* much higher -- I spent DM 25, equal to $15, on a full dinner}.  Reservations are recommended.  Directions: take the Morfelden exit off A5.  At the 2nd stop light make a left on B 44.  Stay on that road until the Worfelden exit to the right.  It will be the first left.  There are signs but it is easy to miss the turn.  It is out in the middle of the forest area.  {I find these directions obscure, but then again, I wasn't driving.  Not quite as good as the Forsthaus Mitteldick, below, IMO, but still very enjoyable.  They have both a prix-fixe and full menu; value per DM appeared comparable on the two.  I had the "Gulasch" (which had nothing to do with goulashes I've had elsewhere) and recommend it.  Magnificent berry desserts!}

* Chi Chi's, Hanau {presumably a chain of which I have no experience}, 06181-160646. Located off A66 to Fulda. Take the Erlensee exit. Follow toward Lumboy and take the Lumboy exit. At the 2nd light turn left; continue about 200 meters, it's on the right. They will except {sic -- "accept" or "expect"? -- the distinction is important} group reservations.

* Chi Chi's, Frankfurt, 069-567578. Take A5 to Frankfurt to A66, Miguelallee exit toward Frankfurt and follow sign to the shopping center. It is located across from the AAFES {military?} gas station. They do not take group or any reservations on Friday and Saturday nights. They close at 10 on Sun-Thurs, 11 Fri and Sat.

* Frankfurterhof, 06105-21958. German and Yugoslavian food. Kitchen open until 11 on Fri and Sat. Take Morfelden exit off A5. Stay on 486 into Morfelden; it is located on the right hand side of the road.

* Luley's, Morfelden, 06105-22277. Very good and reasonable prices; German food. Take Morfelden exit off A5. At second light make a right, next left. It is located behind the Shell station. Closed Tuesdays.

* Wiesental, Morfelden, 06105-22338. Good, reasonable, German. Take Morfelden exit off A5 and at 2nd light make a left. Take the first left after the next light, on the right hand side. Closed on Mondays.

* Kactus, Morfelden, 06105-25071. Very good Italian food, good prices and service. Reservations recommended. Take Morfelden exit off A5, right at 2nd light, next left down to the Bahnhof sign. Right, follow under railroad tracks past 2nd stoplight on your left. {*I* certainly don't understand these directions...} Closed on Mondays.

* Zigeunereiche, Walldorf, 06105-5435. Good German. Go straight out the front gate {of Rhein-Main, remember}, make a right at the first light, next stoplight right into Walldorf on the right hand side. There is a big log {!} out front of the restaurant. Closed Tuesdays.

* Zagreb, Walldorf, 06105-43542. Balkan and German. Directions same as Zigeunereiche, but continue past the Zigeunereiche to the fire station; make a left and it will be on the right hand side of the road.

* Zum Treppchen, Langen, 06103-22412. German. Take the Langen exit off A5. Follow 486 all the way through Langen until B3. Left, follow that past the light and by the church, need to make a right into parking lot. Park there and walk {! -- good way to work off the calories...} down the road for approx. 200 m on your right hand side.

* Lotos, Langen, 06103-25563. Good Chinese, reasonable. As for zum Treppchen, but turn left at the light on B3. Go to circle, make the immediate right out of the circle and it is in the building on the right hand side on the second floor. Open daily 1200-1500 and 1730-2330.

* Acropolis, Langen, 06103-25354. Very good Greek. Take Langen exit off A5, 486 through Langen to B3, on the left before the light. Closed Mondays.

* Henninger Turm, Frankfurt, 069-6063500. Reservations recommended, tx.
411921. {?} Groups for the Henninger brewery only, M-F; please contact Mrs. Carda-Doring at 6063380. Restaurant overlooks the whole Frankfurt area.

* Forsthaus Mitteldick, 69-1801.  Closed on Sun.  Good food but a little pricy.  The dress is not casual.  {This is the one I mentioned in my posting.  The food is *very* good but high-cholesterol; a favorite of my group is the "Jaegerpfanne," and I have enjoyed the wild mushroom dishes immensely.  I have not felt uncomfortable there wearing a sport shirt and slacks, but blue jeans would be inappropriate.  I haven't a clue on how to get there except that it's not far from Rhein-Main.}

I can't vouch for any of these but the Bachgrund Worfelden and Forsthaus Mitteldick, both of which were excellent. (Then again, fresh off the plane I might have found Pizza Hut acceptable...) The ambiance was also superb at both, not the least bit stuffy but still peaceful and pleasant. The only drawback was the high caloric and cholesterol content, but I suppose that comes with the territory. If the other places on this list are as good as those two, then this list is a real find!
