Hi Y'all, we just spent a week in the west central Georgia area
southwest of Atlanta and north of Columbus. Although it's not generally known outside that area, the Atlanta Olympics are going to spread throughout the state with some sites 300 miles apart.
So obviously people attending will want to know about some
good local eateries.
In the western part of the state, events are going to be held
in the City of Columbus and at nearby Pine Mountain's Calaway Gardens (a beautiful 14,000 acre preserve which many consider to be the water ski capital of the world).
About some not to well known restaurant reccomendations:
The Bullock House in Warm Springs (US 27 Alt) is a victorian
home converted to a buffet style restaurant. Warm Springs is a small city of about 600 people where President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Little White House" is located and is where he died 50 years ago this month. Warm Springs is 15 minutes from Callaway Gardens.
The Sandwich Shop, Main Street, Manchester is a storefront
luncheonette where the locals say that former President Jimmy Carter patronizes frequently when he drives up from Plains (about 90 minutes to the south). Manchester is a city of 4,000 traversed by US 27 Alt.
J&E Bar-b-que is a small roadside restaurant between Waverly
Hall and Ellerslie on US 27 Alt/GA 85 about 20 miles north of Columbus. Locals and non-locals alike think that they are in heaven when they are consuming the main course, but then they haven't gotten to the desserts yet.
But for a really good country breakfast, try Slaughter's
Country Store on Main Street in Shiloh just off GA Route 85W. This old fashioned general store with food service is still in its original building, which dates from the era just after the War Between The States. I don't know why they don't expand and take on Cracker Barrell.
By the way, in Georgia the populace reveres the Confederate
Battle Flag (Stars and Bars) so much it is featured on the state flag. To many outsiders it is seen as something backwardly racial, honoring the a government whose constitution protected slavery. But one Gorgian told me that it is to continue honoring the Southern soldiers of that war who sacrificed so much for something they believed in. He reminded me that the South tried to secede because they were afraid that they would not be reimbursed for the loss of their investment.
My own great-great-grandfather fought for the Union Army to
free the slaves. But in the north nobody honors those soldiers anymore, and few honor even World War II, Korean and Vietnam vets and casuatlties.
