Well Ed, IMEO, Virginia Highlands is a really good place to start for good restaurants. The area is named after the intersection of the two streets. It is located a mile or so east of Piedmont Park. Anyways, there are many good restaurants. My favorite are: Capo's (italian, nice back patio), Everybody's Pizza (great on tap beer, good pizza, patio), Pad Thai (great thai food), Murphy's (great breakfast, good other stuff too), Road House Grill (great breakfast), Taco Mac (a plethora of beers to choose from, like over 100 kinds), and my all time favorite is Tortillas. Tortillas is an experience, not only does it have great cheap industrial strength burritos (my friend calls them bean belly bombs) but the atmosphere is something else. You get an industrial strength view of different kinds of lifestyles. It's not for the faint of heart. But it is certainly entertaining.

What more can you ask for?

I had a good time at the Buckhead Diner (crowded, noisy, but good food), and a very nice dinner at a small restaurant called Azalia, also in Buckhead.

Mambo is often good but uneven. Alon's sandwiches are indeed good.

I like Sundown quite a lot, but it can also be rather uneven. Go for lunch until you've got a sense of the menu.

I was really underwhelmed by the Atlanta Fish Market, but lots of my friends liked it a lot. I didn't care for Brassierie Le Coze, though, and here I seemed closer to the general sentiment among those I knew.

No, best BBQ, IMHO, is the Auburn Avenue Rib Shack, in the heart of the Martin Luther King historical district.

Try Fat Matts Rib Shack. (Piedmont Ave.) Authentic soul food rib joint. Cash only...well worth it. The house blues band isn't too bad. Ribs, Chicken, limited side dishes, outdoor dining available. Bring your appetite and a bib.

I strongly second each of Olga's recommedations (except that I would say avoid Mick's and go to a real peasant resturant--even the City Grill if you don't mind dropping some bucks).

On the side of "local color" there is a great bar-b-q joint down just south of the stadium (off of University blvd, I don't remember the name of the road maybe Mc'Something) called Harold BarBeQue. This is the best pulled pork in the city of Atlanta and my mouth waters just thinking about the Brunswick Stew.

Local-color wise - Try the Varsity Drive-In for their chili dogs, onion rings and special orange drink (forget the name). It's by Georgia Tech and visible from the Interstate (85 I think) that cuts through town.

The name of the drink at the "V" is a "FO"-- frosted orange. There shakes are also fantastic. In all fairness, I love the food from the V (I would kill for an all the dog and side of rangs right now), but I went to Georgia Tech and it was a requirement for graduation. Seriously, my wife could never stomach the V. If your adventurous or want to see a place where street bums stand in line with guys in wingtips, give it a shot.

Try these:

Brassiere Le Coze ( Lenox Square-Buckhead)-Upscale, casual, fine food.

For the other extreme:

Fat Matt's Rib Shack on Piedmont Ave.
Ribs/Beer/ Live blues music.

Funky place near the airport:
Spondivits: Virginia Ave off of I-85
Like being at Ponce Inlet Florida without the overwhelming crowds you'd see at Daytona during speed weeks. It's crowded, but you can get in. They have good coastal food for an inland place.
