There oughta be an Athens FAQ... I answer this once every 6 months like clockwork. :-)

Guthrie's off Baxter -- For really greasy chicken tenders. Mmm mmm.. :) Provino's off Baxter -- Italian Springhouse Barbecue off Main Street -- Great barbecue Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q off Atlanta Highway -- Not as good -- But all you
        can eat!
Peking off Atlanta Highway -- Try the Peking chicken! Delicious chinese
food in a really overdone but cool atmosphere.
The Varsity off Main Street -- "Would you like some grease with your fries?" The Grill -- Somewhere downtown -- For late night munchies in a retro
atmosphere. Order a side of feta cheese with your fries. Mmmm.
Half Moon Pub -- Downtown Athens, beneath a cafe, delicious beer and
        appetizer type food.

That's all I can think of. Warning: I have been out of Athens since 93, but these places are all pretty well established. In fact, in the next week I plan on heading down to Athens for my "eating tour" ... ;) Oh, and to meet up with some friends too.

All you can eat of a big plate of crap is still a big plate of crap. Anyone who publicly proclaims what they serve at Sonny's to be "Barbeque" should have their citizenship removed.

Notably and regularly absent from these lists is Carither's on Milledge. Better bar-b-q, better proprieters, better customers, better atmosphere.

Better choice for asian food is the Thai place 2 doors down from the globe. A plate of food bigger than your head and yet there is a complex mix of flavors (though not as much grease as, say, Peking...darn).

Rocky's specialty pies deserve mention (and there it is).

Mean Bean on Lumpkin is fine, cheap, quick. Tip these people well.

Just for the record, Springhouse also has all you can eat plates. I personally prefer the All-You-Can-Shove-In-Your-Face Pork Plate (chopped please) but the combo plate (pork, beef, and ribs) is wonderful.

Get Sonny's off the list. I ate there before there was anything else available and even then it was only when I was desperate for BBQ. Athens has so many better BBQ places to choose from : Springhouse, Carither's, Peanut's BBQ, and the little shack off of Lexington Hwy just before you get to Lexington.

I've tried both and would recomment neither. Head for Peking on Barnet Shoals. Its a lot less salty than the one on Atl Hwy. The three times I have been to the Thai place downtown, I wasn't impressed.

I like the Varsity quite a bit. I haven't been in a while because my cholestrol hasn't been low enough.

I can't believe the places the others in this thread are mentioning. Did I miss something? Were you asking for grease?

Anyway, here's my 2 cents worth. Try the Dogwood Cafe downtown on Broad for interesting food that's cheap. Seasoning in veggies and breads is different from the run-of-the-mill. At lunch you'll see everyone from UGA VP's to attorneys to middle-aged women to students. The food's good.

A couple of doors down from there is the East-West Bistro. Even more unusual food and also cheap. Great atmosphere.

There's a Thai Restaurant on Broad, about 4-5 blocks west of downtown. My husband took some visitors from the Far East there and they insisted on going back. I'm no expert on this cuisine, but that seems like a recommendation to me.

Rafferty's, in an impossible location at the intersection of the Athens Bypass and the Atlanta Highway, west of town, is a good small-chain restaurant with excellent salads. Didn't care much for their spaghetti.

There are two Peking Restaurant locations. One on Atlanta Highway (west) and one on Gaines School Road (east.) We've always enjoyed them. Another old Chinese restaurant, Hu Nan, on Baxter, has a lunch buffet that's cheap. We also eat dinner there sometimes, and there's never a wait.

If you like good deli sandwiches, try Loco's. They have several locations. One is on Baxter, near the university. (This is the original one, sort of---moved from their really original location.)

Enjoy!

Really? Maybe you just don't like Thai food. IMHO, Kuhn Al has some of the best Thai food availible anywhere, including Boston and New York, where Thai places almost outnumber cockroaches. You can probably get better in Bangcok.

The fried squid at Kuhn Al is sublime. The panang and massaman curries are terrific, as is the chicken pad siew (sp?). I have yet to have anything that's really bad. *And*, you can wash it all down with Singha beer, the discovery of which was a pleasant surprise for me.

La Fiesta on the East side is a personal favorite but I can't say there's anything special about it, just decent mexican.

I have to put in a nice word for The Grit for those times when you are sick of burgers and mexican. Not the place to go for a juicy steak but very good food!

The Varsity, although greasy, is the only place for a chilidog. Not as good as the greeks in Bridgeport Connecticut but as good as you're gonna get in Athens.

I will also agree with the votes for the Mean Bean and the East side Peking.

If anyone is interested in the finer places in Athens to throw up, let me know. Having suffered through 1st trimester morning sickness TWICE in Athens, I am quite an expert!

I miss all the variety in Athens. The Flagpole has that HUGE book of reviews and here in sunny Milledgeville we have a *Pamphlet* listing the places to eat!
