Some of the best food in Athens isn't at the upscale eateries. ;^) I'm going on memory here, as I left Athens after graduating 2-3 years ago. There is Kyoto's (which might be under a different name now) off Alps Road. Japanese restaurant. Much like Benihana, but doesn't charge as much and hires Heinz-57-ish college student females (like me :) as their waitresses. I loved the food there. For Italian, try Provino's. I believe it's off of Baxter Street. Excellent garlic rolls and salads. Could beat out the Olive Garden hands down. Chinese? Try the Peking restaurant of either east or west Athens, take your pick. The west Athens location is much bigger and ornate. Their Peking chicken dish is excellent as are their barbecued sparerib appetizers. Really upscale? If Trumps is still around in downtown Athens, give it a try. I've never been there, but I heard good things about it. Kind of a continental restaurant. Ditto for Harry Bissett's, if it's still there. (It's also downtown, right off of Broad street). MY version of "nice" favorite restaurants (with my poor hick college student's budget here...) -- Spring House barbecue. Mmm...Mmmm.. right off of Broad St. -- The Grill downtown, get Feta cheese to go with your fries. -- Guthrie's -- high salt, high fat, weird flavor, it's addictive. -- Mexicali Grill -- where else can 15 underage girls get pitchers of margueritas without anyone blinking an eye? ;^) (They've probably tightened up carding there.) -- Loco's -- moved several times, who knows where it is now. Good wings and beer! Athens, GA suggestions?
No trip to Athens would be complete without visiting the Taco Stand. There are three locations and each is great. Not exactly a coat and tie event . . . maybe tee-shirt and jeans. But the food is GREAT !
