For a great experience I would suggest La Coupole, 102 Boulevard Montparnasse, near Montparnasse Metro. It's an enormous brasserie (must seat 400) with mock-ups of paintings in many styles (Van Gogh, Picasso). Very busy and the waiters move fast, though nothing like as famously rude as the Champs Elysee cafes. There's an excellent seafood bar with all kinds of fruits de mer, and a very reasonable fixed price menu (perhaps US$30-40) - but only available from 10pm, as I recall, and its very popular so you have to queue.

For something more intimate, I suggest Le Petit Bedon, 38 Rue Pergolese. It's a little hard to find, being behind the Arc de Triomphe close to the Bois de Boulogne, but a good street finder map should do the trick. Although the a la carte menu is pretty expensive, they agreed to provide me and my girlfriend with a price fixe special at the request of our hotel concierge, which set us back about US$50 per head for five courses including wine and a calvados afterwards. The service was as good as I have come across, extraordinarily friendly and efficient - the opposite of what you would expect from the city.

Bon appetite.

As for threads of Paris restaurant discussions, I suggest you try dejanews. What sort of restaurants did you have in mind? Do you have a budget? What is your interest in food, French food, etc.? You might want to peruse some of the professional guides like the red Michelin Guide and the GaultMillau, although the English edition of the GM is usually a year out of date, unless they do better these days.

Chez Paul in the Bastille area is excellent and inexpensive -- lots of locals eat there, plus it's quite small, so be sure and make reservations in advance. Also, a Belgian chain restaurant has great mussels and fries, it's called Moules e Frites, and there are several locations around town. Petit Zinc , 11 Rue St. Benoit, in 6th arr. is very good country French -- and quite pretty. If you decide you want a hamburger while your there, you can get a good one at the Drugstore St. Germain.
