We had an excellent meal at L'Ambroisie, but found the place so sombre, that it was almost funereal. It may well have been due to too many foreigners in the dining rooms. We noticed only one table that spoke French fluently to the staff. The rest seemed equally divided between Americans and Japanese. Nevertheless, the food was exceptional, although a course may have bordered on the over refined. Arpege is very creative and perhaps it's simplicity may not be to everyone's taste. We found it quite exciting. Our daughter returned more recently and said it was just as good the second time. Ducasse was not in Paris when we were there last, but I can vouch for the space. Our daughter ate there as well as at Arpege and thought it was outrageously expensive and worth every penny. In the end, food is all a matter of taste, but if any restaurant can hold claim to the finest in the world, I suppose it's Ducasse.
