Last summer most of our best meals were in the small, neighborhood restaurants and bistros. We usually ordered the specials. The following are our favorite restaurants from the trip. I mention the memorable dishes. We used Patricia Wells Food Lover's Guide to Paris and Food Lover's Guide to France to find some of the restaurants. Others we found by walking around or by recommendation by the locals.

Paris:
Baracane - Bistrot De L'Oulette, 38 Rue des Tournelles, 4th arr. Had gazpacho with clams & mussels, lamb kidneys, braised salmon.

Leon's, near the Bastille.
We had a very good meal at this chain restaurant. The specialty is mussels, served many different ways with different sauces. It was one of our least expensive meals.

Le Grand Colbert, Place des Victoires, near Palais Royale. One of the nicer restaurants we went to. Lyonnaise salad, salmon, and gigot d'agneau were outstanding.

Le Bistrot D'Henri, 16 Rue Princesse, 6th arr
Le Machon D'Henri, 8 Rue Guisarde, 6th arr
Small neighborhood bistros with great food. Same owners, I think. Salad de haricots verts, salade aux harengs, gigot roti, cote d'agneau, chocolate mousse, boeuf avec carots all were excellent.

Lyon:
La Grille, 106 Rue Sebastien Gryphe
A small, home style restaurant with very attentive service. Salade Lyonnaise, sea bass, veal liver, chocolate mousse were all very good.

Note: Had dinner at Paul Bocuse's bistro, Le Nord, and was very disappointed. The meal was okay and service was very bad, not very helpful or attentive.

Aix-en-Provence:
Carlotta, 1 rue Aumone-Vielle.
Excellent! Probably one of our best meals. A small, friendly restaurant with great food and service. Carlotta is the chef's daughter's name. Chevre with blini salad, Provencale salad, farcis made of eggplant, tomato, onion, squash (outstanding!), lamb fricasee with ratatoulle, pear tart.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you find some great places!
