Best meal anywhere certainly wouldn't be in this country -- sorry Brits, you have a lot going, but food still ain't one of them, contrary to some recent reports! In London, Best Eurofood I've had was at Maison Novelli in London (upstairs). All three of us had perfectly prepared, imaginative French/Euro dishes. But best food for flavour is my favourte haunt - Thyabs (spelling?) - a Pakistani restaurant off Whitechapel on Fieldgate St behind the 'great' mosque. It is the best sub-Continental food outside of India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka that I've had. You can taste the fresh pounded herbs and spices - no packets and mixes here! Mike Article 367 of uk.food+drink.restaurants:
1) Tricky - too many friends. Pleasantly surprised by Bank last Sat lunch time. Crazy s/w (ask for a dem). 2) Aubergade in Puymirol (c/o Marvel Trama), but please, do not shatter my dream by telling me the truth. I think the point about childhood memories was well made; Marcel Proust put it rather well, I thought. Where can you get madeleine like that? We have the same thing about colour - the so called (soi disant) "memory colours" of chlorophyll, carotene, and the like. In article , Malcolm Loades Someone wrote: >I see that posters are nominating top class restaurants for their most >memorable meal rather than any detail of the meal itself. For me a meal >can be memorable for all sorts of reasons Absolutely right. A very close friend and I were in Southwold, Suffolk, yesterday, and we decided to have lunch at Sutherland House, in the High Street. My friend, who is a great lover of fish, had locally-smoked salmon to start, followed by a simple but delicious grilled plaice with one of the best and crispest salads I have seen in a long time; I chose the locally-smoked chicken (exquisite) with Cumberland sauce, followed by an excellent pork in mustard sauce, with carrots, courgettes, cauliflower and boiled potatoes. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal; both the quality and service were impeccable[1]. To follow, we simply sat on the beach not far up the coast and enjoyed fresh strawberries with clotted cream, and a bottle of mead which I had had for ten years and which was still in perfect condition. It was made by Pepe of Torquay (now sadly no longer producing, AFAIK). That was our memorable meal. [1] no connection other than as very satisfied customers. Regards, Andrew.
