You Sir, fit the classic definition of a cynic by someone or other as 'one who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing!!! What was it??????? At that price we would have read the menu outside, bought the ingredients, gone home and cooked it. ;-) However we do confess to have 'eaten out'. We landed at St Malo and made for the first night's lodgings at Faisan Doré at Fontenai-sur-Orne nr Argentan. We found the place to look as inviting as a Beefeater and regretted booking but there was nothing for it. The first item on the menu was 'Salad Folle'. Never having heard of it we ordered. It was a salad mainly of Cos Lettuce with slivers of Goose Liver and Smoked Salmon. It was dressed with Balsamic Vinegar and the lightest of Olive Oils. The rest of the meal was exceptional but the salad transcendent. The Chef was the wife of the 'Front of House'. She had worked in New York and spoke English as beautiful as she was without a trace of a Transatlantic accent. She joined us for Coffee and a Calvados that did not do credit to the meal and we talked into the wee hours. We bought a whole duck liver and tried 'Salad Folle' out on three sets of friends in England. I think we finally got it right but the fineness of the Olive Oil just failed us. Should we (shock horror) have diluted with a little Huille d'Arachide? I think perhaps; so as long as we did not use Pee Nutoil! ;-)
