Wendy,

My personal favorite in the Lyon area is Restaurant Alain Chapel located a few minutes away in the community of Mionnay. Wonderful restaurant with a few rooms as well. The hospitality at the restaurant was exceptional. The food was fantastic, presented beautifully. Definitely worth a return visit. The 1997 Michelin Red Guide gives the restaurant 4 Red Crossed Forks & Spoons, and Two Stars. 600-800 FF, Phone 04 78 91 82 02, FAX 04 78 91 82 37.

Alain Chapel is in Mionnay, about 23 kilometers north of Lyon. I've heard it's exceptional, but have not been there myself.

In Lyon, I would choose Lacombe's Leon de Lyon. In fact we have reservations there early in May. We were there a good ten years ago and have been eager to return since. At the time we had the gastronomic tasting menu and were very impressed. It remains one of our most memorable meals and a standard to judge other meals. It's also four red crossed utensils for the setting and two stars for food in 1977. I don't believe that was changed in the '88 Michelin.

See my site at http://www.cix.co.uk/~gtigg and click on Lyon on the map that will appear. You will find three recommendations in Lyon, plus also check out nearby Vienne.
