French restaurants

I can't understand why everyone (it seems) rants and raves about Masa's. I was there once and tried their tasting menu and never had the slightest desire to come back since. Not that their food was terrible but it ranged from very good to mediocre, mostly average. Your money can be invested better elsewhere. The service was also nothing to talk about: dirty fork, unattentive waiter.

I know this is ba.food, but if anyone happens to travel to France and visit Dijon or Chinon, I wholeheartedly recommend these 2 wonderful restaurants: Au Plaisir Gourmand in Chinon and Chapeau Rouge in Dijon. Both are rated the best in their cities by Michelin. At $40 or so per person, wine not included, you get far more in food and quality and service than the best in SF at twice the price. Even a (relatively) consistently good restaurant like Chez Panisse would definitely have a tough time competing with these gems.
