After spending a dozen years or so on Sanibel, I can tell you there are a number of excellent restaurants. McT's is good, as is J. Todd's at the Ramada, the Timbers, and the Quarterdeck. We are not fisheaters; if you like fish the list expands considerably. Nearby Captiva Island has several fine places, as well--the Mucky Duck is a good one. I suggest you use the web site http://www.yahoo.com//, and use the path Regional:US states:Florida:Islands:Sanibel for a complete listing.

On a recent visit to Sanibel and Captiva, I found the food to be atrocious! For one thing, it's hard as hell to find fresh seafood, and when you do, it's covered with some gloppy sauce that seemed the height of sophististication to some misguided chef. I often imagined what a French person would think, walking along the beach and seeing shells from cockles, sea snails, scallops, and a nearly infinite number of other delectable sea creatures. And not one of them on any menu. You're lucky if you can find deep fried fish nuggets with chips. (In the Keys, as least, you can get great grilled or broiled seafood.) Give Sanibel and Captiva a wide berth!!! If you have to eat somewhere, try the Tween Waters Inn on Captiva. At least they had a couple of local fish on the menu (look for grouper).
