In Sarasota, the two nicest places are Cafe Bacci and Cafe of the Arts.
Bacci is northern Italian, Cafe of the Arts is more eclectic. Both are on the Tamiami Trail, though Bacci is much further south.
Cafe of the Arts can be a little precious, or cute. But an ambitious menu, very well executed. I have never had a bad meal at Bacci.
The Thai restaurant is mediocre at best...I think it is called Thai Orchid. There is a good "none chain" Mexican restaurant that is on the Trail, south of the "downtown" on the east side of the street...can't think of their name.
Good sandwiches and burgers at the Trolley Station on Stickney Point Road. And the Sarasota Brewing Company, behind Gulf Gate Maill has a familiar format, implemented just fine.
Have a good trip.
