Orlando (WDW) Restaurant Report

We just got back from WDW and here is my report for what we ate. (Our daughter got sick the 2 days after we got there so we spent much more time in our hotel room than we had planned :-(.)

We went to the Crab House once for dinner and once for lunch. It was great both times. It is crowded. There were no empty tables at 9:30 on a Monday night. We had stone crab, garlic crabs, crab cakes, blackened mahi mahi, gumbo, and new england clam chowder. (The clam chowder is the only thing I would not order again.) Warning there are 2 of them. The one near WDW is NOT on International drive. I called ahead to eliminate the wait and ended up calling the wrong one! Make sure you get the one near the crossroads center.

In Epcot we had dinner at the Moroccan restaurant which was ok, but not outstanding. The French pastries were good but not worth a special trip. The soup at the Canadian restaurant was very good.

We stayed at Port Oleans, so we ended up eating at that food court and BonFamilles fairly often. The food court was mediocre, the chicken gumbo was the best thing on the menu. The roast and fried chicken lunch/dinners (especially the rice and beans and biscuits) were the best complete menus. (We did not try the pizza.)

We found BonFamilles was a reasonable value for what you got. (It serves breakfast and dinner only, but no lunch.)

We had dinner at the restaurant in the lobby of the Polynesian and ended up being unhappy with both the service and the food.

The "fast food" was ok for fast food (everywhere we had it) except for the hamburgers. They were uniformly BAD.

Summary: Do not go to WDW and expect good food. If you work at it you can get reasonable/mediocre stuff. If you go off-site you can get good stuff, but it takes time and a car.

I completely disagree, at least for the food at Epcot. I've made 8 trips to Epcot and have eaten at all the countries except Canada and China. I agree with you about Morocco's restaurant. Unfortunately you missed much of the great food Epcot has to offer. Here are my reviews:

Norway: The pastry shop is absolutely excellent. I haven't had anything there that wasn't delicious (but also calorie-laden, I'm afraid). The restaurant is buffet-style and was good if you like fish. Many non-fish items available, but fish did dominate both the hot and cold buffet items.

Mexico: The San Angel Inn is incredible. I traditionally get the mole poblano (chicken in a flavorful chile/chocolate sauce) and my husband typically gets the fillet ranchero (fillet mignon covered w/ poblano peppers, onions, and cheese). The restaurant is inside the pyramid and is dimly lit and beside the water ride for ambiance.

United Kingdom: The Rose and Crown pub has traditional pub fare, but is not lacking in taste. The cottage pie (aka shepperd's pie) is quite good and the Irish chicken (breast of chicken in a tasty brown gravy) is excellent. Good beers available to wash it all down: Bass, Guinness, and Tennents.

France: The main dining rooms (Chefs de France and another whose name escapes me) have excellent reputations. I've only eaten at the sidewalk cafe, Le Petite Cafe, which has excellent French onion soup, salads, ham & cheese crepes, and desserts.

Italy: Alfredo's of Rome at Epcot is the same as the five star restaurant of the same name in New York City. I've had the fettucini alfredo (their trademark dish) was bottomless and excellent.

Japan: I've eaten at the Tempura Room which was quite good.

Germany: OK, but I'm not a fair critic for this one as I'm not a big fan of German food, in general.

Morocco: The most disappointing of all I've tried. I had a chicken and cous cous dish with mostly dark meat (I only like white meat) and not very large portions, if I remember correctly.

We enjoy the restaurants of the World Showcase (the countries) so much, it's often a fight to pick which ones we'll go to (we only stay 1-2 days at a time so we can only sample 2-4 resturants (lunch & dinner) at a time). We have yet to try any of the restaurants in the Future area, but I've heard the Living Seas pavillion restaurant is good. Also haven't tried restaurants at other Disney areas. I just wanted to point out that not ALL WDW food is mediocre.
