My wife and I are new to the area and are looking for a really good Japanese/Sushi Restaurant. We are from Gainesville, FL where we frequented a Sushi Restaurant called Matsuri that absolutely had the best food and service of any Japanese restaurant we have ever been to anywhere. We tried Sakana and Cafe Japone in Dupont Circle; of which Cafe Japone was pretty nice, but neither came close to dining experience of Matsuri. Does anybody out there have any suggestions?

Have you tried Sakura Palace in Silver Spring, right on the DC line? The sushi portions are small but fresh and well-prepared, on weekday evenings (except Fridays) most nigiri sushi is $1.00, and they have a great Japanese/American salad bar. They are one of the few sushiya in Maryland actually run by Japanese, instead of Koreans :) ==================================================== Sushiqueen personal mail: [email removed] business mail: [email removed] "Music is the best means we have of digesting time." -W. Excellent food and service everytime. I also think it's the oldest sushi bar in DC. Also for a cheap, but good, sushi happy hour try Cafe Asia between 5pm and 7pm. $1 a piece for really tasty sushi. Cafe Asia is downtown on 19th just below M St. -Jay You can't lick the system, but you can certainly give it a damn good fondling...

Why, yes I do. After having been to almost every sushi restaurant in DC, there are two that stand above the rest. IMHO (and that of my Japanese wife, her father, and some other Japanese folks who hang out here), the absolute best is Makoto. It is located on McArthur Blvd. across from the Safeway. It's a tad expensive but definitely worth it. Reservations are highly recommended since it's small and very popular. I personally prefer the bar counter seats to the tables. A close runner up is Tachibana on Lee Highway about two miles west of Rosslyn. The atmosphere isn't nearly as close to a real Japanese restaurant as Makoto but the food is quite oishii (tasty). Try to go on Friday night if you can because that's when the fish is freshest. If you're a real sushi aficianado, both of these places will custom make a sushi dish that you can't find on the menu. Tachibana is a bit cheaper than Makota. I agree with your opinion about Cafe Japone. It's OK and kind of neat place to hang out, but I wouldn't go there for the food. I do like watching the Sumo wrestling even though they don't turn on the sound and I can't hear the "play-by-play." If you're in to quantity and not necessarily quality, try all you can sushi at Atami (Wilson Blvd. in Arlington) or Appetizer Plus in downtown Rosslyn. AP is all you can eat Japanese and Chinese food for something like $15 per person.
