I don't know many places in Ft. Lauderdale, but if you're into taking a drive up the coast a bit, try downtown Delray Beach. This a new happening spot that is just being developed (a new Las Olas?), with great restaurants and art galleries up and down Atlantic Avenue, the main street. There are quite a few new places with varied cuisines there.
One I'd like to note is CITY LIMITS. It serves great Southwestern food (not the "chain" type), ranging from the traditional spicy to more mildly seasoned ( for those who would rather not "go for the burn"). Besides great food, they have a wonderful outdoor music venue and bar, with music Wed through Sun every week.
