Cheryl -

We went to Bethany last summer for a few days (we usually just drive to Rehoboth for the day) and ate out every nite because there are SO many incredibly good resaurants there. We took our then 18 month old and a babysitter who was in heaven getting to go on vacation & eat out too! Anyway, one place we really liked was Ann Marie's in Rehoboth. It's Italian, on a corner, and I think it's yellow and looks like a house. We ate another nite at a seafood restaurant, but I'm not going to be a big help here. It was wonderful and it's on the same street as the Blue Moon, but I can't remember the name now. The Blue Moon is also very good, but quite expensive (and not really family friendly). I will say - it is part gay-bar, but I personally could care less and the restaurant & bar are separate anyway, if you do care. That's a better place to go with just your husband. For pizza, go to Grotto's - do not pass go, do not collect $200. It is some of the best pizza you will ever have. ALL the food there is great. We're not talking Pizza Hut here - this is the real stuff. There's one in Bethany about a mile up from the beachfront (and happily within walking distance of the townhouse we stayed in!).

If you need more info, please e-mail me and I'll find out more names of the places we went to that I can't remember sitting at my computer in the dreary spring.

P.S. And, if you get the chance, go to the Starboard in Dewey for drinks after the beach (you can bring the girls). You sit (mostly stand) outside on a deck and they have the very best Strawberry Daiquiri's you've ever had in your life. In fact, can I come with you???

Here are my suggestions for the BBC guy who's being paid to eat his way across the colonies (boy, would I like his job):

BBQ

Most of the guys on the list know more about this than I do. But, I went to a wedding in Memphis once, and the pre-wedding party was catered by Corky's, which is supposedly famous. The food was outstanding. If I were doing the show, I'd go down to New Berne, NC and nose around.

Chili

The best thing to do is go to a big chili cookoff. The granddaddy of them all would be the Chili Appreciation Society International championship in Terlingua,
Texas in November. A cookoff would be a lot more photogenic than a restaurant
-- with the show teams, banners, etc. And everyone would be walking around in cowboy hats and boots, half drunk on tequila by noontime.

On the other hand, a chili restaurant with a lot of character is the Hard Times Cafe on King St. in Alexandria, VA. The Parker brothers, who own the place, cook chili in competition well enough to qualify for Terlingua, so their stuff is pretty good. I like to sit at the bar (actually more like a lunch counter) at the back and play country music on the juke box (ten cents a play). Hank jr and sr. Patsy Cline.

Ice cream

I'd go to Four Seas ice cream in Centerville, Mass (on the road to Craigville Beach). It's been a family business since 1939 and has a loyal legion of fans.
The recommend their hot fudge sundae with coconut ice cream, which is awfully
good. But they might be getting tired of being on TV. They were on PBS last month (or so I've heard).

chicken

I'd go to Popeyes. Maybe there's something more original in New Orleans.

burgers

The best burger I ever had (aside from ones I've cooked at home) was at Archibald's in Washington DC (outstanding buffalo wings too). But maybe the naked dancing girls wouldn't go over on TV. Try the sports bar upstairs, which uses the same kitchen.

pizza

Good pizza is strictly an east coast phenonemon. You need a critical mass of Italians (or even better, Greeks) to have good pizza. I was once in San Diego and had an urgent craving for pizza. We passed by Pizza Hut (an instinctive reaction for a couple of Massachusetts boys) in the hope of finding authentic pizza down the road, but after 100 miles of driving ended back at the Hut. Way below average, even for Pizza Hut.

The best pizza I've ever had was Greek pizza at Bells in Amherst, Mass. However, a really good story could be made about which pizzaria in Rehoboth Beach, Del. makes the best pizza. IMHO, there is more good pizza in Rehoboth than in Washington DC, which is 100 times bigger. Crowds line up to get into Nicola PIzza, who make a very good pizza (and an even better calzone).
The local giant Grotto's makes a good, but uninspired pizza. Nick's on
the boardwalk is famous for their "white pizza" (cheese and garlic, no tomatoe sauce). I think Louie's is the best, although I concede that this is a minority view.

Down here in New Zealand, there's no good pizza, burgers, chicken, chili,
or BBQ (except chez moi). Had a nice Malaysian curry for dinner, though. I swear, it's just a matter of time before I open my own place.
