Someone recently required about restaurants in Prague (the
posting died before I had time to reply!). My wife and I have just returned from one of a number of stays there, and this time we found what we think is the best of all restaurants we have been in. It is the CAFE-RESTAURANT MOSKVA, at 29 Na Prikope, the large street that runs SW from the Powder Tower. They serve the best French Fries I have ever eaten, plus a large and varied menu. I think the best thing on the menu is Elk (yes, real Elk): I have never had better in the Western US. But they also have a large variety of Czech and Slav dishes. The borscht is also magnificent. It is open from 1100 to 2300 hours, and there is an associated Cafe open in afternoons and evenings. (It is best to check in advance about the restaurant because, as we once unfortunately learned, it is sometimes taken over by some Czech company for an entire evening for employees only, and non-employees simply cannot eat).
Incidentally, we stayed at the Best Western (!) Hotel on
Hibernska Street, which is very close to the Powder Tower and the Moskva restaurant, and were very pleased with it (it is an old style regal hotel, totally unlike our BW versions). The people at the desk were exceptionally friendly and very helpful with unusual requests, and the location is magnificent: one can walk just a few blocks down Celetna Street to the Old Square and the Bell Tower (there is a truly outstanding Classical music store enroute, where CDs and Tapes of Baroque and Renaissance music are abundant, and the new Naxos line tapes of such music sell for about $4! Plus they have lots of stuff recorded in Czech churches: Lassus, Palestrina, and Montiverdi, e.g.) And there is music all along the street by a capella singers, clarinet solos, etc. And the Metro station is close by the Powder Tower. All in all, a memorable place to stay and a memorable restaurant made this a wonderful visit.
