Don't miss the Wooster Square area, and old Italian neighborhood. You'll find the two best pizza spots *anywhere* - Sally's and Pepe's - but be prepared to wait in line. The seating is limited, but the food is so good no one thinks twice about waiting. Also on Wooster street, Delmonaco's and Tre Scalini. Up State street you'll find Christopher Martin's and Gennaro's Ristorante D'Amalfi. If you want a light vegetarian lunch or dinner, try Claire's Corner Copia on Chapel street (right next to the old Yale campus). There's such a diverse selection in the area that the yellow pages lists restaurants by specialty: Afghanistan, American, Caribbean, Chinese, Continental, Greek diners, Greek, French, Indian, Italian (by far the largest group!), Japanese, Mexican, Middle Eastern, Seafood, Pizza, Soul Food, Steak/Beef/Chops, Vegetarian, Viet Namese, and West Indian.

Haven't been in New Haven for almost two years, but I should note that I wasn't exactly bowled over by the genral quality of food in town - that includes the reknowned pizzerias. There was a place, fairly new, on Chapel Street right across from the campus, called Union Something or Something Union like Union Square or Union Station, that served some very surprisingly fine food. There's also a pasta place, more nouvelle than traditional Itlaian, that's not at all bad. It's also on Chapel across from campus near the rep. theater. Depending on what's doing in town, like if it's Parent's Weekend, you probably need reservations.
