If you left Monday, then you probably didn't get this note in time, but I still wanted to share what I know about Winnipeg restaurants:

Although Winnipeg has a large Chinatown, I have not found the Chinese restaurants to be good; far inferior to even the very worst in the D.C. area. Although there mey be some new ones that are better. I personally prefer Hunan and Szechuan varieties to the Cantonese that Winnipeg specializes in.

Your best bet that I know of are the traditional type restaurants: every time I visit Winnipeg I go to a place called C. Kelekis which has fantastic food (hot dog/fries/shakes of the quality never found in the States). Also there is a fast food restaurant called Junior's that is one of my favorite meals in the world (if cholesterol is a concern for you, avoid this place at all costs). You mentioned that you didn't like steak restaurants, but The Keg is another place I like (it seems to be found all over Canada, however). I haven't tried the Ukrainian food but many Ukrainians are living in Winnipeg and I would be interested in how the restaurants are.

I imagine more ethnic restaurants havpopped up in Winnipeg and the quality has probably improved since I was last there. Hope you enjoyed your trip-- write back saying where you ate and how it was when you can.
