Vancouver??? Hmmm? Well for good food you can pretty much go anywhere... Budget minded? Try Sophie's Cosmic Cafe on 4th (very well known in town so you won't have trouble finding it). It is really good for breakfast, funky atmosphere, steady stream of coffee etc.. The Cactus Club is a good, lively restaurant on Robson St. Usually packed, a bit of a celebrity hang-out if you dig that sort of thing. Milestone's is a good spot for reliable, casual lunch-type foods. They have quite a few locations in town: on Robson, on English Bay, on Broadway.... A similar style can be found at Earl's restaurants. They also have a lot of restaurants in Van. A bit higher scale can be found at the English Bay Cafe, great food, great view, great service (all things considered it is quite reasonably priced for what you get). I could go on but to sum it up, hang out on 4th Ave and you are bound to find some great food Random selections..... Italian = Portobello's Greek = Oreste's Quality - Le Crocodile Steakhouse = Joe Forte's Bon Appetit!

Vancouver
My favorite place for hot dogs in the world is Ted's, in Buffalo, right at the foot of the Peace Bridge before you cross into Canada. They are charcoal broiled and come with a great hot(not very) sauce. I get the foot long, with everything. They also make their own onion rings, not the prefab frozen kind. I think the lumnch goes great with a loganberry fruit drink. Enjoy.
My son, who lives in Vancouver, just told me about a restaurant that just opened in Vancouver called "A" (yes, that's its full name).
My son used to live in Paris, and we frequented the restaurant there many times on visits to him. My son called long distance a few weeks ago to relate the amazing rebirth of this restaurant in Vancouver.
The restaurant is a "classic" chinese restaurant run by a Vietnamese refugee who fled to China and studied 18th century classic Chinese cooking in Bejing. He then migrated to France and opened his wonderful restaurant there. Now he is in Vancouver.
The recipes are intriguing and delicious. Haven't tried anything I didn't like. The chef/owner is most entertaining and he will carve some exotic vegetable momentos for you to take home with you.
I'm sorry I don't have the address, but the you can get the phone number through "information" and find your way there. It is well worth it.
Ina
P.S. We don't know if the restaurant is still open in Paris (Left Bank--5th or 7th Arondissment).

=-= Food
I tried to classify them according to why they were recommended.
Bakery
- I have just discovered that there is a real Montreal style bagelry on
12th & Lonsdale in North Van. This is important news to anyone who
craves for a real wood oven baked bagel. Add some cream cheese and a
Koala Springs and the rest is like heaven...- Jim Collier
Casual
- Tomahawk in North Vancouver, known for its Lumberjack Breakfast, and
various large burgers. - Verner Janz
- Hamburger Mary's down on Davie Street, and the burgers are good, but not
really the same thing as In'N'Out. - Steve Pope
Chinese
- On lok (no atmosphere, but good and cheap food) - Corinna
- For Dim Sum I would probably head out to Richmond, a suburb just south
of Vancouver. There is a large Chinese community there and many many
excellent restaurants.- Linda Perry
- For Dim Sum and dinner, I recommend Flamaingo at Fraser and Top Gun in
Richmond. Especially for dinner, both places offer these deals where you
can choose 2, 4, 6 ...etc dishes from a long list of dishes which
includes desert and fruit for a very good price. In fact, the Flamingo
adds a full size crab on top of this deal, and Top Gun either offers
shark fin soup or a crab hot pot.... all three are fairly expensive
dishes which is offered for free with these deals. You can also forget
about these deals and just pick your plates as usual. But these deals
are the best deals in town. And as was agreed by many, these two places
have some of the best chefs for a good price. - Thomas Wong
- Dim Sum at Ming's on Pender street is as good as they come. Also
there's a terrific dim sum in downtown on the northwest corner of Nelson
and Granville. Enter on Granville street, go upstairs. There's another
Chinese restaurant downstairs, but it's not the one. - Judith Mastai
- If you want ethnic food go to Chinatown in Vancouver or in Richmond,
there are too many good chinese restaurants to name. - Edward Jong
East Indian
- Rubina Tandoori 604/874-3621 - Jose Bernardo Hernandez Morales, Mike
Blades. Possibly the best Indian food in the city. - James Glave. My
favourite Indian restaraunt. - randall g
- the Sitar. There are two locations in Vancouver 564 W. Broadway and 8
Powell, both are good, I prefer the one on Powell Street, which is
Gastown, a historic area of Vancouver will quite a few interesting
places to shop, although it is a bit ragged around the edges. - Linda
Perry
- Ashiana (now on Kingsway -- been going there for many years). - Paul
Franklin
- Usually found near Main and 49th of Vancouver. There also is a lot of
East Indian food located in Scott Road between Delta and Surrey. -
Edward Jong
- Surat Sweet at 6665 Fraser. It is quite small (around 4-5 tables), so
reservations are a good idea. The food is superb and inexpensive. You
can dine on appetizers alone. Small, family run business, and the
proprietor will tell you all about the cuisine. This place has had rave
reviews from several restaurant critics. - Paul Franklin
Ethiopian
- Messob 604/876-5998 - Jose Bernardo Hernandez Morales
Funky
- Sophie's Cosmic Cafe on 4th Avenue has a wonderful ambience as well as
friendly staff and great food. The lineup for breakfast/brunch on
weekends shouldn't deter you. It usually moves fast and Sophie often
passes out coffee to those waiting in line. - Judith Mastai
- Alma Street Cafe is the jazz place, on Alma at Broadway. It's a bit of
a hike, but worth the trip. - Judith Mastai
- Denman is full of restaurants of all sizes - if you're up late, you
might want to try the Bread Garden (it's open until midnight). Great
baked goods and salads/entrees, and a heated patio for peoplewatching. -
Adrienne Brown
- Wazuubee Cafe on Commercial - near 1st. Great food at a good price.
Great music, if you have an alternative bent. Really friendly people.
The BEST coffee that I've ever had at a resteraunt. Extremely FUNKY
atmosphere. In fact extremely funky sums up the entire experience.
You'll find more body peircings in this resteraunt than you will in the
entire West end. - Doug Chinnery
Ice Cream
- best in the world is Mom's Ice Cream on Denman Street. My flavourite -
mango and kiwi ice cream. This Mom/Pop owned store has been approached
by hotel joints to share their receipe but they want it to remain as
family owned. Very reasonable prices for the quality of what you get. -
Andrew Brownsword. I agree. - Doug Chinnery
Italian
- I'm by no means a tiramisu expert or connisseur, but I DID have a killer
batch at Nick's Spaghetti House on Commercial. Wicked... - Doug
Chinnery
- Spaghetti Factory - Corinna
- Azzuro Deli, on south side of Robson just east of Bidwell. Run by Dario
and Avelina Fracca, they make THE best pasta. If you want tiramisu, you
have to tell them and pay in advance (about $6 per serving), since they
only make it by special request. Tell them that the Tan's recommended
them to you. - Wei-Yuen Tan
Korean
- Arirang 604/879-0990 - Jose Bernardo Hernandez Morales
Mexican
- Mescaleros in the west end (ambiance) - Peter A. Boronkay

Blades. If you like Thai food, we like the Thai House. It is
inexpensive, tasty and hot!! (Just look at the menu at how many chilis

out. - Shiraz Dindar
- the Nam on Broadway. Decently priced w/ good food and/or atmosphere,
also in a location a tourist might want to check out. - Shiraz Dindar
- the Indian restaurant at Fraser & 26th. Decently priced w/ good food

excellent, cheap, and the place has a hippie atmosphere too. It's open
