I just ate in early July at The 5 Sails Restaurant in the hotel attached to the convention center. It was a wonderful view of the harbor (and the sails!) We had Robin as a waiter, who was extremely professional and accomodating. When we asked to split appetizers and main courses(each of the 2 of us ordered one of each), he and the kitchen were very accomodating: We ended up with a 4 course meal, each course being larger than half the normal portion because they wanted it to look nice on the plate!
I was not overwhelmed by the inventiveness of the menu, but it was certainly serviceable. There was pate de foie gras, but it was so heavily infused with green pepper corn as to be inedible. The seafood soup used local fish and was excellent. We had salmon and sea bass for the main courses, and they were not over cooked. The sea bass was particularly well prepared.
The wine list was quite expensive, but there were several interesting gems in the lower ranges, and we found an interesting S. African wine for about $30 Candadian.
Martinis were large but frightfully expensive, but there was a splendid selection of eaux de vie for $6.
For another nice Vancouver restaurant with better food (IMHO), go to Le Crocodile. No view, decidedly less expensive and formal, but do reserve for this excellent French restaurant (with fresh foie gras of goose--out of this world!)
