I was there recently and had two really great dinners at Fettucine's on Bank St. Entrees were ~$9-14, and their special, which included a salad, entree, dessert and coffee/tea was ~$20 the night we were there. The food was great -- a simple boneless chicken breast topped with a fresh tomato-basil salsa was unbelievably moist and quite delicious. Gnocchi with a tomato-cream sauce flavored with Sambuca and oregano was heavenly. I'd choose their house salad over some of their appetizers, though. One place that several people recommended to us was an Indian restaurant called Haveli, at 87 George Street. We heard that the food and service are excellent. I don't know if they take reservations, but I'd call and try to get one -- the night we wanted to go there, we called ahead and learned that it was very crowded and we'd have to wait (but we were too hungry...). Here are some restaurants that were pretty good when I was living there: For Italian food there are: Fresca on Elgin, The Canal Ritz.. on Queen Elizabeth drive, Clarence Pizza (i think that's what it is called) on the market has some great pizza and great dessert (try the zucotto!). Italian town is on Preston, La Favorita is a famous place for original and sophisticated pizzas. Haveli is one of the best indian places but it is quite expensive another restaurant is Light of India on Bank street.. As someone else recommended, The Savana Cafe is a nice place for Carabean food it is on Gilmour (close to Bank), and it has a nice ambiance. The best place for fajitas is the Lonestar cafe in Nepean at Baseline and Fisher. Chinese restos are on somerset street: Yantzee and Mekong are pretty good. There is also a small Vietnamese resto not far from there close to Booth or Pearson, the sign is green I think it is called Mee Foo.. There are three good Thai places: the Palais Thai in Hull on Montcalm street, The Thai Orchid (or something like that) on Kent (or Lyon) street in Ottawa, and the Royal Thai on Dalhousie. For sushi, the best place in the Festival of Japan on Kent, The sushi garden has a nice atmosphere. Le Quatre Jeudi is a bar/restaurant in Hull behind the street of bars on Laval, it has a good atmosphere, and I assume that the food is good. There is also a popular restaurant in Hull called Mon Oncle Antoine it is by the Lake Lemeay, in the summer they have a nice terrasse facing the lake and it is surprisingly close to the city. It is cheap, fast, great for brunch. There are also some nice restaurants in Hull: Henry Burger is certainely one of the best in the Ottawa-Hull region but it is quite expensive, there is also le Tartuffe, La Soupiere and Jean-Sebastien Bach that are not cheap but not outrageous and worth the trip. Good luck. Sylvie. From X Sat Feb 11 22:30:39 EST 1995 Article: 13741 of rec.food.restaurants

Chez Henry Burger Le Pied de Couchon L'Oree du Bois (prehaps the best value in Ottawa/Hull) On the Ontario side, I could recommend: Le Cafe (NAC) Le Jardin Les saisons at Westin was good but it's been quite a while since it closed.

Mekong is not a Chinese restaurant, but is Vietnamese. There are several good Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown. Some of the names I remember are: My Tho, Pacific (?)... Also, "Good Morning Vietnam" (I'm surprised they haven't been sued to my knowledge) on Rideau was good. Is it still there? Ben Ben across Somerset from Yang Tze is cheap and good. Yang Sheng at the corner of Bronson is dirt cheap and reasonable. New Hong Luck also on Somerset but few blocks east is also quite good. We used to go there quite often. |> There are three good Thai places: the Palais Thai in Hull on Montcalm |> street, The Thai Orchid (or something like that) on Kent (or Lyon) street |> in Ottawa, and the Royal Thai on Dalhousie. I beg to differ here. The restaurant on Kent is pretty lame, and the Royal Thai is hardly Thai. The latter is more of a Chinese restaurant, really. Siam Kitchen on Bank just south of the Canal was excellent until it along with its sister restaurant, Siam Bistro were bought by the owner of Ta Tung, which actually used to be the best Chinese, IMHO. Ta Tung really went down hill about 5-6 years ago. |> For sushi, the best place in the Festival of Japan on Kent, The sushi |> garden has a nice atmosphere. You mean, Suisha Garden... Festival Japan is probably the best sushi in Ottawa, but that's not saying too much...

Henry Burger is a fine French restaurant with lots of wild game. We had a large group and got seated in our own room. Service was great. We also sampled Icewine, which is an Ontario specialty. It was excellent. Expensive, but if you like wine, it's worth a try. A half-bottle is about CN$ 40 in stores. Harvey Lee From X Tue Feb 21 13:05:47 EST 1995 Article: 13995 of rec.food.restaurants
Re: Ottawa Restaurants I was in Ottawa from '75 to '79 at U of O and went to the HAYLOFT as often as $ would allow. They made the BEST French Onion Soup! Took my wife in '83 and it was still great! Don't know if it still exists but it was great! Mark From [email removed] Fri Sep 22 10:59:13 EDT 1995 Article: 19459 of rec.food.restaurants
