Highly recommend La Castille. I believe it is on the west side of Toronto. Great atmosphere--like a castle inside, great service, great food.

My favourite is North 44 Degrees

Southern Accent (Bloor & Bathurst)
-- excellent food (best lamb in
Toronto), very knowledgeable and
enthusiastic staff, party like
atmosphere, regularly cherished for
over 15 years... (if you go with
someone special, request "the snug",
a room where your table is cut off
from the rest of the dining room by
walls of red velvet and the waiter
must knock before entering
[hopefully you're not up to
something uncouth])... $140 for two
with wine and tip

Cafe Societa (College & Ossington)
-- very small menu, but seasonal and
huge on quality and preparation...
my meals there -- from breakfast to
dinner -- can only be described as
"perfect"... the chef must be
obsessive-compulsive, but I say
cheers to the fruits of his
neurotics -- insanity never tasted
so yummy... Though small, the menu
should serve everyone their
druthers, of the 5 mains, there's
usually 1 fish, 1 red meat, 1
chicken, 1 pasta and 1 veg...
Service goes up and down, depending
on the waiter... $100 for two with
wine and tip

Aunties and Uncles (College and
Bathurst) -- Strictly for breakfast
and lunch, but oh how wonderful...
There is nothing priced over $5
here, and what you get for that is
heavenly... Though the waffles are
legendary, my favourite is the daily
omelette -- which is usually
something like caramelized onion and
leeks with brie (or something
similar) -- served with challah,
cured black olives, a lovely new
potato salad and seasonal fruit...
juices are of the fresh squeezed
variety and always offers something
unique like blood orange, kumquat or
lychee... Atmosphere is kitszchy
(like being in a late sixties rumpus
room) and service is generous
(rarely will your coffee be less
than half full)... $20 for two with
juice and tip

Then there is the usual round-up of
stiff, bourgeois hang-outs: Canoe,
North 44, Prego della Piazza, The
Fifth, Scaramouche -- too many to
list, Toronto is up to its elbows in
pretentious (though, admittedly
fabulous) dining...
