Someone wrote: >Hi. Any recommendations for great restaurants in the Niagara Falls area? Just back from a weekend on the Canadian side. Spring is about two weeks behind, and the river is completely covered with ice under the Rainbow Bridge. Massive blocks of ice around both Falls, consequently no Maid of the Mist yet. Daffodils are just now coming into force. This coming weekend will be the big Bulb Parade on Saturday morning. New this year beginning May 17 and lasting until end August are Friday night fireworks at 10 p.m. (also on major US and Canadian holidays during that period.) Well, to your original question! On the Canadian side there are lots of cheap places and all the American chain restaurants. Many breakfasts advertised at $2.99 (all prices Canadian. $1US = $1.35 Canadian, but don't forget to add on the steep provincial and federal taxes, which are recoverable on food.) Many breakfast buffets at $4.99. We tend to like views of the Falls, and for that the Minolta Tower can't be beat. They've reinstituted the pesky escalation charge ($2 pp), but will give you a coupon for another escalation free. There's a new chef this year, and he really knows how to put together an appetizing plate. Big on fish, a nice New York strip with bearnaise and shrimp, Canadian pork loin, etc. About $15 to $25 for main courses and a good selection of Canadian wines. This is not *great* food, but it is pretty good, and the Falls make up the difference. For the best, ask to have Edith as your waitress, who is perfectly bilingual Fr/Eng. Table Rock Restaurant right at the Falls has a palatable lunch and dinner menu, better this year than last. Wait for a window seat. I think the best strategy is to cobble together a meal by ordering several appetizers and one main course and splitting. About $10 pp for lunch. Lots of tour groups. Victoria Park Restaurant is directly across from the American Falls on the Canadian side. It opened early this year. Wait for a table on the outside patio. Rather high prices, nice view. If they have a lunch buffet (about $15), this is worth it. Service *can be* agonizingly slow. The restaurant at Queenstown Heights has a very good Sunday buffet. Starts at 11 a.m. (reserve a window seat), $15.99 pp. Not as good as last year, but still very good with a nice, high view of the river as it empties into the Lake and of Toronto on a clear day. Ask for Nancy for great service. I still like the Prince of Wales Restaurant in the hotel of the same name in Niagara on the Lake (about .5 hour drive from the Falls.) Reserve in the Garden Room. To my palate, the cooking has deteriorated from some pretty lofty heights, but it is still the best I've had in the area. Creative cooking using Canadian products. Extremely good wine list starring Canadian wines. Very high level of service. About $60 pp incl wine, tip, 3 courses. And there's the Shaw Festival a five minute walk down the street to fill out the rest of the evening. Bon voyage au Canada!

In any event, one of my favorite Chinese places can be found in Ft. Erie, Ont, a brief (20 minutes), nice drive up River Rd. Great view of the Niagara River. Superb food. US funds, you should get out for about $15.00 per person. Ming Teh, 126 Niagara Blvd, 905-871-7971
Offhand, the only one I can think of right in Niagara Falls is a hungarian one names something like "Csardas". Actually, the name is probably wrong, but ask someone where the Hungarian restaurant is. There is great Chinese food in Fort Erie, Ontario, a 20 minute or so drive from Niagara Falls, Canada. I recommend Ming Teh - one of my favorite restaurants in the whole world. Try Moo-shu pork and Shrimp with broccoli and garlic. Audrey Someone wrote: > Hi. Any recommendations for great restaurants in the Niagara Falls area? > > TIA. > > Barb > >
