I really like the following:

Le P'tit Port: Seafood, small, family-run, simple and elegant, small menu that changes frequently. Roughly CDN $30 each for full dinner with a glass of wine. Excellent food!

L'Actuel: Belgian, mussels and chocolate. Big, efficient, excellent and interesting preparations of mussels. Maybe CDN $40-45 per person.

Da Marcello: Italian (Tuscan?) - excellent food, a bit noisy perhaps, nice subtle dishes. Roughly CDN $40-45 per person?

I haven't been to Montreal for about 18 months.

If you don't mind a short cab/car hop out to the West Island (about 15 minutes), try Le Gourmand, 42 Rue Ste. Anne, Pointe Clair - 695-9077

This is a charming little place with french/nouvelle type food and carries a $70 - $90 (Can) tab for two including wine.

I went there 2 months ago and had a great meal at Les Halles - traditional French cuisine - very good. Also, since I stayed at Hotel Vogue, I ate at their restaurant, which was pretty good as well. One restaurant I wanted to try was Toque, but it was closed when I was there.

The dollar went pretty far in Montreal, although that may be because I am used to NY prices. Les Halles was about $40 pp and Hotel Vogue was probably about $30 or so. Only one of us drank.

Check out the March issue of Food & Wine - there's a big article on dining in Montreal.

And have a Montreal bagel for me - apparently they're a big deal, but they can't be any better than a real NY bagel.

Why not try something more particular to the city? Schwartz's Deli is the best place for traditional Montreal smoked-meat sandwiches. Smoked meat is the local version of pastrami. Schwartz's is located on St. Laurence, is quite cheap, and is always packed with an interesting crowd intent on good eats.
