Where to eat in Santa Barbara?

Downey's is sensational. The best ingredients, perfectly prepared. Nice,
not fabulously impressive room. Service wonderful. I repeat.
 Sensational food.

We've also eaten at Citronelle, a twig on Michel Richard's Citrus in LA.
I think Citronelle is far better than the mother church. Pretty room,
 with view of ocean.

If you have just one night, or just one night to splurge, go to Downey's.

The one time I was in SB (1992) I ate dinner at a place near the beach
called Woody's (the Motel 6 I stayed at had flyers for it). It's a rib
joint that very definitely caters to the locals. You order, pick up
your food and pay at the register. It was interesting, to say the least,
trying to eat smoked duck with a plastic fork and knife.

Funny thing, though: that duck was the best dish I ate on a 2-week
coast-to-coast trip that included, SF, LA and Chicago.

We just returned from that area. For upscale dining, Wine Cask is
great. "Casually elegant" atmosphere, attention to food presentation,
 huge wine list.

When we asked where the locals go, we were sent to Brophy Bros. down
on the habor pier. Loud, bustling, busy, but lots of fresh fish and
huge side portions of coleslaw, etc. Both table dining and counter.
If you can, go for early dinner, because it does get busy!

 Hope these help--
