Went to Vi's Vietnamese joint on Webster near 8th in Oakland "Chinatown" (quotes since it's so much more than Chinese!) for lunch today. Imperial (type) rolls were run-of-the-mill...not as tasty as Mai's on Clement in SF, but good. Spring or steamed rolls were quite unique...served warm, kind of slimy, innards hard to analyze but tasty, fried shallot garnish tied it all together, and overall they were truly delicious if a little awkward to eat. 5-spice chicken entree (over rice) was excellent, garnished with crunchy peanut bits and marinated scallion sludge. We split that. Two of us could barely finish what we ordered, in fact we left some delicious chicken behind. All the plates had plenty of fresh herbs, vegetables etc. A lot of folks were all over the pho, and I saw some very interesting-looking plates of food at other tables. I plan to go back. Place is strictly cash! We spent $20 with tip...

There is an appetizer that has several items on it including fancipork that we always get. As the other poster said we eat a lot of pho there, though I wish Tai[owner] would serve pho ga! But alas, only beef. If you order the beef on the side and insert it as the plate comes to the table it will be cooked just to the correct degree of rare. My wife, on the other hand always gets her beef in the soup in the kitchen. To each her/his own. This is the kind of eating adventure that keeps us living exactly where we are and where we want to be! Cheers, Kent

You should order the pho next time. It's the best I've ever had. The broth has a wonderful flavor, and the noodles have great texture.

Will, as I said in a previous post, a short two blocks E. on 8th is "Phnom Penh house on eighth and Alice is a great place, run by the Do family. Also great food and great company. The lines run out the door at noon." If you're haunting the Oakland Chinatown this is a must at some point. Cheers Kent
