My personal favorite is the La Jolla Brewing Company on Fay in La Jolla, followed by the Pacific Beach Brewhouse in Pacific Beach. Hops! is okay but infested with yuppies, the service is iffy (sometimes good, sometimes so-so), and the brew is only semi-interesting (all IM[BH]O, of course). Brewski's in the Gaslamp district is okay but the service is so-so. >Where's the best southwestern cuisine restaurant? Cilantros. From the sd.eats file (ftpable from ftp.sdsc.edu) Cilantro's, 3702 Via de la Valle. Del Mar. 259.8777 $$-$$$ Nouvelle southwest, with a constantly changing menu. Exquisite desserts. Black bean soup to die for. The same folks own Epazote in Del Mar, which you should avoid unless you like crappy service. Valet parking only. >Where's the best Japanese/veggie restaurant? For veggie, Kung Food has a good reputation. I've only been there one time, many years ago, so can't say how good they are. 2949 5th Avenue. For Japanese, meaning sushi, I like a little sushi bar off I-15 near Mira Mar but I can't remember the name or the exact address. It's in a little strip mall. For a rather eclectic mix of Japanese and southwestern, try Cafe Japengo across the plaza from the Hyatt. A friend describes it as sort of nouvelle Pacific Rim. He also describes the decor as Blade Runner without the rain and steam. :-) Pricy, though. >Where's the best American restaurant (along the lines of TGIF or >Bennigan's)? Both of these are present and accounted for in the area and are virtually identical to every other TGIFridays and/or Bennigan's you've ever been to in your life. There's also a place called Baxter's on Genessee (sp? I never can spell that damned street name right) that sorta fits the bill.
