If you're going to be near Santa Cruz, we've had very good luck for Thanksgiving dinner at Chaminade, a restaurant/corporate retreat complex in the hills above town. It's a buffet-style dinner, and that may not be as cozy as you like for a holiday dinner. But the food is extremely well-prepared, and there's quite a variety: your son can have his turkey, while you can have something more adventurous. The food ranges from traditional to Mediterranean/Californian, and they usually have a fine selection of salads and desserts.

The dining room is large and fairly plain, although you can get excellent views from window tables. Service starts at noon and goes into the evening; if you come in the early afternoon and the weather is mild, you can dine outside on the terrace for an even better view of Santa Cruz, the Monterey Bay, and beyond. We did this last year and found it very pleasant.

It's a flat fee per person, $25 each or thereabouts, not including liquor.
