I"m not exactly sure what you mean by middle of the road, but we like Gaspare's on Geary at about 22nd or 23rd ave. It's a pretty traditional (read "non cali-italia") place. Exceptional (imo) pizza and very good pesto, chicken cacciatore etc. No goat cheese or mesclun or like that.

just to disclaim in advance of the rush to flame - I have nothing against either goat cheese or mesclun or the like that stuff. Eat it all the time. I'm just assuming that "middle of the road" might be close to what gaspare's offers.

hope this helps

It's 71 Washington. (I was excused from jury duty for the day.)

I *love* this restaurant. It was one of my favorite dining experiences ever. The food was excellent--the tiramisu gelato is to die for. The food isn't particularly fancy but it is VERY good. This place is sort of expensive--about $30 each--but *well* worth it. I am totally in love with the man who runs it: I wanted to take him home with me to live and cook for me.

Reservations are mandatory on a Friday, don't know about other days.
