From where do you think Taiwan cuisine originated if not the mainland? ;-)

If you're in San Francisco, make sure to try Taiwan Restaurant but not the one in Chinatown. Go to the one at Sixth Avenue and Clement St. Terrific food, ridiculously low prices. Go in the morning and you can order a Taiwan brunch.

Popular Taiwanese juice bars are popping up all over SF. They all feature the tea or fruit drink with large tapioca balls.

There are two Taiwan Restaurants in SF. I don't think there's any connection with the one in Berkeley.

I've heard that the 168 Restaurant in the Pacific West ("99 Ranch") mall in Richmond is Taiwanese.

Just in case you decide to broaden your search to the East Bay, don't go to the Taiwanese Restaurant (that's its name) in Berkeley on University just west of Shattuck. The food was noticeably regional and tasty enough, but I got really, really sick. Not that I could prove a connection, but I was sick enough to make possible libel the lesser of two evils. And I *never* get sick.

Tainan Restaurant in Milpitas Square shopping center is very Taiwanese. The food they offer is mainly of the type served by street vendors in Taiwan. Heavy on the organ meats. Very adventurous stuff. When I was there, none of the wait staff spoke much English.

The word from a Taiwanese couple I know: authentic, but not great. Nonetheless, I rarely see empty tables there.

Thanks for reminding me. The Taiwan Restaurant in Berkeley (near Shattuck and University) is indeed another branch of the Taiwan Restaurants in San Francisco (same menu).

It's food is quite good too, better than the Chinatown Taiwan (a real disappointment) but not as wonderful as the Clement Street Taiwan.
