Red Ribbon: Koma Sushi in Fremont, in the Fremont Hub Shopping Center, near Fremont and Mowry. $20 per person with miso and sake. Sushi and service are noticeably better on weekday nights, when it's not so crowded.

Blue Ribbon winner: Ichiban on Foothill Blvd in Hayward, between A and B Sts. $15 per person gets you miso, sake, and the chirashi special, which is 3/4 lb sushi rice and about 12 pieces of fish. The saba and squid (ika?) sushi there are the best I've had anywhere. Good service, too.

My favorite place is Sushi Sue's in Alameda in Park St. It's a small, upstairs restaurant run by husband and wife Sue and Sen (he's the chef). They're great people and the food is outstanding. Problem? It is small, but I've never had to wait long to eat. Try 'em.
