well, it's *not* san jose, but my faves are: la fiesta (or fiesta del mar) for all things verde or mole (mountain view) estrellitas for their specials. i find their regular menu items to be appallingly bland and uninspired but they have some wonderful specials - i had an incredible mole there once made with pumpkin seeds. San Jose Mexican?
For a nice small place try Casa Vicky at 17th and Julian. It started out many years ago as a takeout place, then added a couple of tables then tables with umbrellas outside, then they bought the house next door and then they expanded the original. Its now a nice small restaurant with beveled crystal glass windows. You order at the register and pay and they give you a number to put on the table ala Burger King. The food is good and the service excellent. They give you a lot of food, don't order the burrito supreme unless you are really hungy. El Tarasco at 4th and Taylor was mentioned upstream. Its owned by Daniel Bravo, a likeable guy who follows his father's advice, "don't serve anything you wouldn't eat yourself." He'd rather have you go away too full than feeling hungry so portions are generous. At lunch time you may have throw someone out to get in. dflory on AOL [email removed] on Internet D.FLORY on GEnie 72133,1626 on CompuServe
